I have a FOWLR right now but would love to keep clams with them. Okay here is the stupid question... Any clams I can keep under a 18w 50/50 PC? Please don't rip me to bad, I am a poor college shmuck and need to conserve my $$$$. Thanks... and be kind, Shaun

I don't think so. Even the lower light clams like Hippopus, Squamosa and Derasa are going to need a lot more light than that, you can try moving them very high up in the tank but derasa and squamosa sit on the substrate in nature and you will find placing them on the rockwork they will keep shifting around and tumbling (at least mine did).

The easiest and lowest light seeking clam is the H Hippopus but I still don't think you have enough lighting. HTH.

hi.
There are many non-photosynethics clams, and you can even keep them in the dark if you want. They are typically more difficult than the T. clams (T. hipp. T squ. T. derasa, T max. T. crocea, etc), since non-photo. calms need special feeding regiments. Let us know if you be interested in the light-independent clams, such as flame scallop, mussles, etc..

How much light do the H Hippopus need? I could always look for alternitives but I definatley don't want to try a flame scallop, I think they should be left in the ocean due to the poor survival records they hold. Thanks for anymore info and being nice.

hi.
You can try to put a clam near the top, right underneath the PC lamp, and see how it is doing after a few days. 18W is miserably low, but you maybe able to pull this off by getting the clam as close to the light source as possible.

If the color is browning up, be prepare to bring it back to the LFS for a 1/3 store credit...

I think that you would be dooming a clam even if it were right underneath it.
