I just added 5 new snails last night and today at least 4 are dead of the 11 total. Do snails suffer stress like fish?? The only thing out of the ordinary in the tank is the temperature fluxuations from the faulty readings on the chiller. Should I be looking for something else??

i can't even tell you how upset I am right now!!! After I posted this I removed the hood from my tank to try and reach some of the dead snails and noticed a very familiar black charcoal type substance in my overflow!!!!

If you don't know 3 of my 4 azoo power heads burnt out again!!!

I posted something shortly after I set up my tank, I was assured by the manufacturer that this was a flaw in the units and should not encounter any more problems!!!!

Interesting!

If that's all you lost from your Azoo's melting, consider yourself lucky. Certain model Rio's have similar problems and people have wiped out a considerable amout of their tank when they do go bad.

Just out of curiosity, how about posting your tank's water parameters:

salinity
ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
alkalinity
calcium
temperature

What was the salinity of the water in your bag of snails before you dropped them in? My gut feel is that it's either salinity shock, temperature shock, or ammonia/nitrite that caused your problem. You do need to temperature and salinity acclimate your snails if they're shipped in water.

sorry that took so long.

Parameters:
Temp: 79.2
Ph 8.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
Kh 8
salinty 1.023
calcium 490

The snails were actually out of a 60 gallon tank at my parents house that water parameters are almost identical, since I maintain that tank for them.

I acclimated them for almost 2 hours and they lived in the tank for almost 3 weeks. I then added 4 more with the same acclimation process. At this point all snails are dead, I removed them when I noticed the black stuff from the pumps. I am in the process of doing water changes to hopefully recover the tank for the second time in 4 months due to the same problem.

My advice, even though the azoo powerheads appear to be a great savings, the cost could have been 1000's. I know my rock will recover, at least it did the first time. 350 #'s and 250 #'s of live sand. I had just purchased a chevron tang and thankfully had left it at the LFS for a few days!!

So the only costs to me at this time is 15 snails and abalone and 75+ gallons of RO water and salt!

I guess it could have been alot worse. :x
