is it the lawnmower blenny or the algae blenny or are they the same?

thanks Robert

yes, they are one and the same. i have one who eats any and all types of algae. caulerpa, hair, film...you name it. if you find that he may be running out of a natural source within your tank, you can always offer him nori. i supplement my blenny with nori and he loves it. hope that helps. ;)

Ine eats Diatoms, film algae, even a little corraline too. They'll eat that thin layer of micro algea ypu can't see but if you feel for it you'll feel the rocks or glass feels slightly slimmy thats it before it grows enough to see.

Sean

btw mine is a Black Algae Blenny I don't know if it makes a differance.
Oh Robert email me some pics of the tank, and if your going to cmas sunday. And did you get your skimmer fixed/replaced.

If you are going to purchase a lawnmower blenny from your lfs, please make sure it is eating prepared foods first. Those that don't more often than not slowly starve...very sad, indeed.

My lawnmower blenny did not eat any kind of algea, he eventually starved to death in two months, he did take some frozen brine shrimp, but then he stopped, i was pretty disappointed, cute little guy  .

are you sure you had a lawnmower blenny? sometimes LFS mislabel scooter blennys as lawnmowers.... scooters dont eat algae but pods, if you had a lawnmower he would have ate the film algae, either that or he was sick.... lawnmowers have the huge mouths the scooter has a small mouth and is actually a dragonet it looks like a mandarin.

hmm, interesting thought. wonder if it was indeed a scooter. at any rate, it's true that lawnmower blennies can behave differently with each owner which is why i think it's a good idea to experiment with as many food sources as possible. odds are you'll get lucky with something, be it natural or store bought.

as far as scooters go, i've watched mine scoot around scooping up pods all day long but he will also be one of the first to eat frozen foods at feeding time - he likes prime reef and formula one.

sorry to hear about your blenny, bond007069.

;)

yea definitley, no 2 fish are the same... some are finicky and some are pigs.... i love my scooter and lawnmower they may not be the brightest colored fish but they really make up for it in personality.... its funny when the huge lawnmower runs into the scooter and they just kinda check each other out for a while... like face to face... then swim on...

IMHO, no one should purchase a lawnmower blenny for the sole purpose of eating hair algae. It is just too hit or miss, with way more misses than hits, imo.

hmm, maybe i'm confused but i must've missed the part where someone mentioned buying one for that reason only. i was under the impression that everyone here already had a blenny and some were just wondering what they ate. i apologize if i misunderstood.

hehe, yea good point... i for sure didnt get mine for that only, althought it would have been a plus if he ate hair algae because the fish is a pig.

I would only get 2 like I did, it may take them a month but they will live longer. I know a guy who bought 9 for his 125 gal and most of them died when there was no more algae to eat. Also aclimate them pretty slow, I was told they can be a bit delicate at first. I Left mine in the bag for about 3-4 hrs and slowly dripped tank water into the bag till it was full then put them in and they are doing fine.
