would a mag12 or a quietone 5000 be better for a 4ft head attached to a 1in sea swirl....basically i want max flow without exceeding 1100gph which is max for 1inch sea swirl. thanks

I think a Mag 12 @4ft would be alot less than 1100gph. I would get an 18 and put a ballvalve on it. Another option is the velocity pumps CSL priced right. They are quiet and powerful.

Was this a trick question? Cause you answered it yourself. :?: :?

I would agree but as long as you don't toast the sea swirl. Mag are a much better pump althought they don't handle back pressure with a damn.

it wasnt a trick question, I already new what they were rated as far as head pressure, more looking to see if anyone would recommend those or not. I wasnt sure how accurate the ratings were and didnt want to ruin my Sea swirl. So mag12 is what i should get then? Just maybe throttle it back a bit so that its more around 1100gph rather than 1130? Thats the only problem...i dont have a flow meter and thus do not know how much to throttle it back.

I thought that it was unsafe to put a ball valve on a Mag or any other pump because it would damage the impeller and lead to the untimely demise of the pump.

I have used Mag's from 5 to 36. They don't seem to ever achieve their flow rating for head pressure. I do think they are excellent pumps for the money but I have found that I need to upsize to get the flow I wanted.
They do require regular maintenance with cleaning to remove Ca deposits to prevent uneven wear and restart problems.
Just my experience.

Agreed about the magnums however don't put any kind of flow restrictors on the pump in my experience they have always reacted badly to back presssure. Usually by burning up and cavitating.

I doubt it, how many changes of direction do you have until the SS. Any 90 degree or 45 degree turns will reduce flow as well as diameter of tubing. I'd say go with the mag and you be fine I'm sure the SS can handle it although if your unsure keep a close eye on the SS for stress.
