I fragged my sinularia and now the main colony is beginning to develop brown specks on the tissue where it was cut. What is this/is it diseased/dying? What can i do? TIA :D

Please provide pic.

It's likely the cut is causing infection.

If indeed it's an infection, Do a search for Iodine dip of how to prepare the iodine solution for disinfecting (dipping) corals. I would recommend twice a day for 2 days.

I dont have a digicam so I cant get a pic however i will post my best description in the morning when the lites are back on. I did a search and many of the methods involve a commercially available iodine product like Reef Dip. I have Kent's Tech-I iodine supplement would that be safe to use? :)

I use Lugol's solution, which is mostly available in pharmacy, and some pet store also carry them.

Normally to use as supplement (not recommended though, highly debatable), we dilute lugols to fresh water by 1:4 first before administering to tank.

If you want to use as dip, I would use about 20-30 drops of lugol to a gal of tank water. Because the iodine concentration is very high, you should really just "dip" it for a few seconds.

Thnx for the reply, however I think the colony died before I could get a better look. The body is now a dark feces-brown with some light tips. :( Anyway now I know what to do in the future. TA

I cut the top 1/3 off as well as a few branches, using my Swiss army knife scissors (used em cuz they were sharp and small enough to do the job right) The first brown infection really only occurred on the cut where i did the top 1/3, AFAIK. :|

Did you take the coral out of the tank when you cut it?

Did the frags live?

I used my swiss army scissors to frag u/w a few times and even tho I rinsed them in fresh water the joint froze up on me.

I also find it best to cut smaller branchs then let them grow out. And only a few branchs at a time at most.

Sorry for your loss.

I personally keep all my coral in the water when I frag, and run some carbon. I think it's less stressful for them as they never leave there normal spot. Just like a fish coming by and taking a few bites.

I will do that next time.

I think the good frag is going. The tissue is now pretty black with green tips. The other frag may live. This suks. :( Is there anything to do that i can save it? :x

If it is a brown protazoan jelly infection I would do a fresh water dip to kill the protazoans off. Then I would rubberband the piece inbetween two pieces of LR rubble and stick it in an area of soft current.
