After adding live rock and sand, I have progressively noticed some brown specks scattered around on the sand surface. I'm not sure if this is what so many call "detritus", if it's some kind of life, if it's fish poo, or what?? But it would be nice if I could get some critters in the keep the bed completely white. I know the stuff isn't diatoms, it's more little chunks of stuff.

I wasn't sure whether to suck the stuff up with a turkey baster. This also made me wonder whether I had enough flow, or if I should start adding some more detritus eaters to the tank.

if you are sure in's not diatoms my next guess would be cyno. Does it have bubbles in it? Is it growing like a mat?

Nope not like a mat. It may be rubble from the newly added rock or die off? Doesn't look like cyano, or diatoms. not an algae or bacteria. it looks more like little fish poo chunks or just little misc things that came off the rock.

All I have in the tank now is:

1 large Mexican Turbo snail
6 or 7 hermits
and a few really tiny snails
