Hey Tackett, they live in water down to 2oo meters! I have read they are hard to feed. Most will only eat live food. Very water sen. and only come out when the lights are off. I guess the glow would look cool though. I think I would pass on these. Andy

I've seen tanks set up with them at public aquariums. They keep the tanks very dark and you have to look carefully to see them. I doubt they would be very comfortable in a brightly lit tank. Perhaps if there were enough caves and overhangs they could adapt. You might have to feed them after the lights went out. I would recommend doing more research before purchasing one. I noticed at MACNA that the New England Aquarium has them on display, maybe you could call them.

Wow, I cant believe they are actually selling these-I would think the cost of transporting them to the surface would outweigh the profit?

I can't imagine these being easy to keep either, but they are cool!

Nah, thats on the list too. I dont like spending money on something that only has a life span of a few months to a year. But it would be cool..no?

They need to stay where they belong. ;)
though I did have an octopus for a while, though it wasnt a blue ring. It lived for close to 3 years before it died.

Id call that a success, they dont live for much if at all longer than that in the wild.

I think that was a freak or something, ive never heard of anyone having one for that long. It was quite possibly the coolest pet ive ever had. It was a pretty good size too when it died, it was about a foot in diameter, maybe 8 inches including tentacles. Great conversation peice. It was also the cheapest fish ive ever owned, i didnt have a light or a heater on the tank. my tank stayed about 65 degrees and everyone said that it was still too hot. I didnt understand the concept of a chiller back then. Id like to try to keep another one now that my fish skills have improved. Though the thought of having something that could potentially put my ass in pine is just freakin cool!

Tackett, I used to sell those flashlight fish in the early 1980's. These fish seemed pretty hardy in captivity. They converted to frozen food after guppies, just like many lionfish. The bacteria don't withstand medication in the system and the light gets dimmer if you have to use any antibiotics.

Tackett, your cool waters probably kept the octo alive for so long. 65 sounds just about right for most of the species you would run into in the hobby.
Do you know if it was a Bimac or Vulgaris (sp?) or something else?
I have always wanted a octo tank but just dont have the startup funds laying around to do it the way I really want to.
