A) Do you target feed your corals, and what kinds are there that need target feeding?

B) What is the best link for coral information? ie. if I wanted to know what the best way to care for frogspawn is, is there a site that I can reference for that kind of info?

C) If 7-11 stores are open 24/7 365 why do they have locks on the doors?

D) Have you ever counted backwards from 20000 using only prime numbers?

Some corals do require feeding, some do not. I target feed mine on occasion just for good measure. It really has to do with how big of a food type the coral can handle. For some SPSs and such DT's Oyster eggs are good... while I feed entire silversides to a big plate coral I have.

As for a good link. I'm not sure. I consult The Reef Aquarium Vols. I and II for most of my information about this kind of stuff.

The only corals that "need" to be fed a non photosynthetic like sun corals, some gorgonians, ect..

Many will take target feeding with mysis, like rics, zoas, many LPS, ect..

Yes I do, and as posted (most) any coral that is non-photosynthetic needs supplemental feeding.

;) right here, using the "search" function. Also, Borneman's book on corals has a ton of information and great pictures, I use it all the time.

So the when the clerk is working alone late at night he can lock up to use the restroom.

No, but then again I also didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

Apparently I am completely inept at using the search here then. I have tried and will get 100 threads that have the word coral in it but nothing about feeding. Or I will get 100 threads about feeding fish but none on corals OR 100 threads on frogspawn and how cool they look and sweepers but nothing on placement feeding lighting etc. Kind of frustrating.

So here is the list of corals that I have. Do I need ot hand feed any of these or would the oyster eggs do the trick for the whole tank.

montipora digita
candy coral
xenia
frogspawn (tinny little one about 2 mm)
gsp
mushroom
buttons
zoas
galaxia
encrusting gorgorian

I have not target fed anything, I feed either marine buffet or myasis to teh fish enriched with zoe. Everything appears happy and healthy, just want to be sure I am not missing a critical task.

Be sure to click "Search for all terms" when you search. The default will search for ANY word in your query.

Your corals produce majority of their nutritional requirements through photosynthesis. Some people additionally feed corals like caulastrea, in the literature is written that they benefit from additional feeding, I support idea that such feeding is unnecessary and doing bad efect to water quality..

there are some non-photosynthetic gorgonians and buttons so their survival is dependent on feeding but I didn't noticed any of those on your pics..
So my advice would be to go with the water quality ...

I feed many of my corals (the ones that will take food anyway).

There are many corals that have part of their bodies structured to catch and consume food. My thought is, why would corals have these structures to help them catch food, if they didn't need to eat? Many large polyp stony corals contain abundant sticky feeder tentacles, as well as capacious mouths, so it seems to me that if they have these organs, they serve a purpose to the animal and it should be offered food.

Once I started feeding my LPS, they exploded in size...my acathastreas, micromussas, dendrophyllias, scolymias, etc...even the bubble coral are going crazy with size increase.

I would always recommend feeding LPS, especially with krill and mysis.

Peace,

Chip

Ranger. I feed my own blender mush to my lps tank.

Go to the store and buy what seafood is on sale. Mussles, clams, squid, shrimp, a small piece of tuna ( ususally shaved from my roommates future dinner . Shhh. don't tell her!)

Blend with a cup of saltwater. Either microwave tank water and let cool, or use freshly made.

Add vitamins of some sort. I add selcon, and some ESV freeze dried phyto. Last time I added a chunk of cyclopeze that thawed out.

Freeze in ice cube trays. I use the little ones because my tank is 20 gallons.

Thaw one cube in a shotglass of tank water. Use the turkey baster to mush up the cube. Target feed at will. Dump the rest in the tank.

I feed 2 or 3 times a week. sometimes at night, sometimes during the day.

Search for "coral food" or "recipe" ( ignore hits from the sump.)

Yeah, that's what I feed also.

Only I don't make them in ice cube trays, I make either a flat sheet or use a tablespoon to measure it onto that sticky plastic wrap and make little sealed packets. With either, I just break off a small piece. I've heard that you can "mix your mush" with unflavored gellitin, maybe one day I'll try that.

Great tips thanks. I fed my candy coral a few days ago after getting the first hits from this thread. It was amazing to watch the reaction of the coral. It seems toalready be larger and much happier. I was amazed at how fast it can turn its stomach out and devour a piece of krill. I actually hand fed them by putting a piece right on the mouth and it just snatched it up. Way cool. Or as Eric Cartmen might say...hella cool. Only 4 out of the 8 mouths on 2 heads have eaten though the other 4 won't take it yet, but I will keep trying. I also received a TINY frogspawn (incidentally hte coolest cutest coral I have seen, only about 2mm big) what do you recommend for feeding that? Thanks again for all the help.

Another way to make small feedings of 'blender mush' is to get a bowl of super cold ice water the drop the food in by the teaspoon (or in my case a 1/2 teaspoon) into the freezing water. The stuff freezes into little balls which are easy to feed.

Also, in the craft sections of stores you'll see the 'dot' sized candy sheet molds, I'm told they work really well  as long as you don't try and put chocolate into the same mold used prior to freeze the fish food.
