I picked up a colt coral, it couldn't be taken on the rock it was attached to so they LFS guy cut the base. To attach it to a peice of rubble I have I put it in a container with some mesh over the top and the rubble and some sand inside. Problem is is that the coral will stay near the rubble, then it will float up and then land again somewhere else. It will never attach this way, what can I do?

they way I do it, is get a piece of thread (reef safe thread :)) and literally tie it to a piece of rock, not so much that it cuts into the base but enough to hold it against a piece of rock. Within a week or two you'll have it attached.

I used a plastic toothpick and rubberbands. Plastic because it's easy and clean to take back out. Depends on how wide the base is, but push the toothpick through the base of the coral as neatly and cleanly as you can, try to do it with one swift push. Leave the toothpick sticking out enough on both sides that you can attach it to the rock using rubberbands. Leave it there for about a week or so.. until the colt attaches itself.

Youre method should bew fine. Try moving the basket to a lower current area in the tank. Also make a dug out in the rubble in the container so it doesnt attach to the container it self. I use this method to attach all my frags and just use a black plastic basket wiht no mesh. I put it in the front side of my tank where flow isnt strong enough to make the frags float around.

No problem, sorry for the bad typing. I cut the tip off of my finger off at work last night and it made it hard to type. 8O

LOL of all the fingers to injure that is the best one!

Ugh, this coral will drive me insane!!!!! It will be great for about 5 min., then I come back and it's on the plastic again. ARGH!

Will I stress it too much if I keep trying to fix it? I don't want it to attach to the plastic.

why dont you use some super glue gel and attach it?

Gel straight to the frag base? I don't think that's a very good idea. I will use epoxy once the frag attaches to some rubble.

Super glue gel works great on lots of corals, but with colts they slime and dont hold up well with glue. Either try the toothpick method or add a deeper pit of gravel in the basket and slightly bury it.

I finally got it to sit, and now I see that it has attached to the side and part to a piece of rubble. Of course, I moved the rubble to see what it attached too and accidently tore the base of the rock that it was attached too. So basically it is now attached to the plastic. Now what do I do? Let it grow back on the rock use a razor blade?

Thanks, I would like to get it out of the container soon. :)

That's a heck of a thing. *chuckle* I would definitely get it out of the plastic cup this time though, and make sure that it attaches to rock and not the cup :)

I've seen people use bridal veil as a net to hold the coral in the area of the rock they want it to attach to. You might try this so that you don't have a coral stuck inside a cup again.

OMG I dont know what happened, it looked fine yesterday and I wasn't checking on it because I wanted it to attach and now it looks like a big jelly blob, all mushy and stuff. The base is still attached but the coral looks really bad, can it be saved? Argh next time I'm doing corals with a base for my first coral (kind of). :( :x

sounds like your colt has had better days.
i have propagated leathers before and all i do is tie them onto a rock with an eleastic band. then i set the rock in an area with moderate water movement - that's all. the elastic holds the coral in place and will keep tension on the base when the coral retracts for any reason. the corals usually look normal by the next day. a few weeks (two usually) the elastic can be removed and the coral will be attached firmly.
i have never tried putting corals in containers but think that would seem like that would take a long time and possibly stressful for the coral. try this method and see how you like it. it's easy and i haven't had a coral die yet and i have done this for a couple of years now.
here is a good site for learning coral propagation:
http://www.garf.org/
on the left of the page click "propagation" then click "colt corals"
hope that helps
