Dursos put out a lot of bubbles in the sump since it sucks down air. Any ideas how to reduce this spray? I've been thinking about using filter socks, but replacing them regularly has its drawbacks.

That does help, but all the bubbles still cause a lot of spray in my sump. I've also thought about building an acrylic cover of sorts over the area where the overflow dumps into the sump.

I used lots of baffles

my current setup I have 2 sumps, the first the tanks feed via duroso, the skimmer skims from this sump

the skimmer return's into the 2nd sump, and the tank return feeds off this sump

there is a bulkhead connecting the two, no way to ballance skimmer vs return pump

it works out really really well, but it does require more space, luckly my sumps are in the garage

What about directing the flow against the wall of the sump?

yea.. but that still leaves spray stuck to the sides of your sump in that area (if that would be a consern). could the output be put under a angled baffle to slow the bubbles down? this seems a bit strange to me but I didnt think this was such a big problem (I didnt know that the durso put out that much air in a sump).. what is your flowrate like for the size of the downpipe? are you using a smaller flowrate then the pipe can handle, average or pushing it a little hard? Im thinking that this might make a diffence in the amount of air but its all speculation on my part..

could the overflow dump onto some rocks just below the surface of the sump, perhaps the bubbles would break when they hit the rocks...just a thought

My plumbing is a standard durso. That is, 1 1/4" narrowed down to 1". It makes a 45 degree bend under the tank. I'm using a Panworld pump that puts out about 1200gph. The durso seems to be working great .... just lots of expected bubbles (since Dursos actively suck in air) that I'd like to control better. Directing the flow to a sump wall results in a lot of spray (and future salt creep) on that wall.

I use a bunch of 90 pvc's to make a small ladder into the sump, reduces velocity, I also exit the return under water, with a T fitting so it does not gurgle

Hmmm. I'll give the T fitting a shot. Gurgling isn't much of an issue though. It's the darn bubbles that are annoying me.

FWIW, my sump is baffled to death. No bubbles get back into the tank, so that's not an issue either.

I ended my drain in a tee with the through running up down. On the top part I had a length of pipe running up. No splash, spray or salt creap.

Waz, you don't happen to have a pic, do you? :)

A long slotted bar sounds like a possibility.

len,

why not use a micron sock box by itself... it has a lid... bubbles don't bother me.... why is it an issue.

are u just trying to avoid salt residue everywhere...?

Ha!

I know exactly what you are talking about Len.

You are talking about the spray from the little micro bubbles rising to the surface and popping...

right?

Put a lid over the area, that worked the best for me

Of course then I went and cut the lid up for something else so now I have mold and salt creep at that end of the sump

I've seen live rock rubble built up around the pipe, that seemed to work. I'm going with an acrylic top though. Shallower baffles in a deeper sump would help if you you were starting from scratch, which I know your not len, just an idea.
