My frogspawn always has its oral disc exposed. In all the pics I have seen of FS, I never see the oral disc. Does anyone know if this is normal or perhaps it is craving some meaty foods? I will try to get a pic.
Its hungry. When its REALY hungry and senses food it will release a maroonish brown mucus so it can trap what it can and pull it back in to its mouth. Itis probably used to regular feedings and thats why your seeing its mouth open alot.
Nautilus, you might want to read this reefkeeping article. It tells you what "maroon brown mucus" really is but hopefully you will not have that problem. Frospawns are not the best shippers so if you have just purchased this coral keep an eye out for ""maroon brown mucus" and do what the article says to do.
The brown mucus yor speaking of ( I THINK) is when the coral contracts somthing or gets stung by somthing , and spews out its zooxanthellae. There realy is a semi clear brown mucus it spews out when it feeds. try feeding cyclopeez and find out. It realy does.
Yes they do spew out some zooxanthellae if they have had it rough during shipping but this is usualy nothing major, and recovers fully in a week or so. They will also throw off a protective slime coat after shipping in some cases, but not very often
BTW was there supposed to be a link in your post above?
Completely different scenario then what I was describing.
(Or at least what I was trying to describe).
That article dosent describe anything at all as to the casue of the "bail outs". I bet it either had an internal parasite, or it was being stung by a near by neighbor. (yes even frogspawn can be stung by other corals, IE hydnopora ridgata.) The brown slimy stuff described by the author is dead tissue sliming away. ( Like ricordea, and discosama's do when they slime out. That is usualy a realy good sign somthing has stung the be-jesus out of it. All it takes is for one polyp to be hit by a more agressive coral too.
Then they all will more than likely drop like flies as time drags on if the sting is bad enough.
This scenario as I am taking it, is that the frogspawns mouth is simply gaping open a bit for long periods. Thats why I say it is more than likely just hungry.
Thanks for the replies. The coral appears healthy. There has been no mucus. Tghere is nothing in the tank that could sting it. Its appearance is strange- there just is not a dense aggregation of polyps as in other frogspn. It looks like an Elegance coral- with the oral disc exposed and polyps around the perimeter. I will take a pic tonight.
In my experience it's normal for Frogspawn to occationally expand so much that the oral disk is exposed, especially in lower light situations. I've seen it often of small colonies or individial polyps but also on large colonies once in a while.
I've never seen a frogspawn use a brown mucus to feed. To me a brown mucus sounds more like waste from a large meal or expelling Zooxanthellae.
The problem may be low light as Guy stated. I was worried about the amount of light when I first got it. I have a 96 watt powerquad on a 12 gallon. The Frogspawn is about 8 inches from the light with and about 4 inches below the water level. I originally had it about 4 inches from the light- very high and it still expanded so much with the oral disc exposed. Certainly that should have been enough light when i Had it up very high but at this point I dont know.
That should be plenty of light unless it's a "Smartlamp".
As long as it's looking healthy I really don't thing you have anything to be concerned about. Once it grows out more it will look more like the Frogspawn you see on TV
Nautilus: (now that I know who you are LOL!!) LOWER YOUR FROPSAWN OR RAISE YOUR LIGHT. ( Like I told ya before goof ) Its too much on it ( Unless its a 15g tall that is?)
Didnt you just get that a coule weeks ago? get your larger tnk yet?
Savethereefs:
It could have been a boring worm of some sort, just about anything.
My ricordea:
1 of 2 ways. Naturaly let them sub ivide, or segment them with a razor.
Those are the two ways I propogate my rics.
The mucus when feeding:
Do you have a frogspawn or a hammer? If you do then try to spot feed it some frozen cyclopeez and you will see exactly what I mean.
I cant belive no ne else has ever noticed this on here guys?
Fragmaster I did not see a single small or tiny ricordia in your pictures, is it safe to say that all of those were the ones you cut? Do you have any pictures of fresh cut ricordia?
Ya Its been about 4 weeks I think. I would like to lower it but there is no room on the bottom right now. I m saving some room for som e Rics on the bottom, hehehe, I wil try feeding it some mysis shrimp and see what effect that has. Wouldnt the current not being strong enough cause the Frogspawn to really expand cos thats what its doing. I know they prefer gentle current but maybe i went too far. I dont think its unhappy but its nice to know why they do as they do.
Savethereefs: The reason you dont show pictures of small ricordea is that you dont want people to think thats all you have. THEY ARE in the picture. Not fresh cut but you can plainly see them. Takes 3-4 weeks for them to recover fully from a cutting. youdont want tocuttomany at once either, as you do not want to run the risk of one fouled, slimed out ric blowing over on another and creating a domino effect.
Top rack on the far right upfront: Gold rics
scattered ALL along the bottom: Blue, orange and green. How do you think I have colonies of Florida ricordea? PROPOGATING.
It is illegal to take whole colonies or rock from florida water. I do not apreciate the insinuation about it. I take this hobby and my ricordea very seriously.
My ricordea are legal and roughly 50 percent propogated stock. ( you have to have rics to make rics)
Nautilus would you like to share somthing? (Not to slam him but to shed some light on this)
Now stop Jacking this thread.
Nautilus:
Yeah they need some current but not alot, just enough to make the polyps gently sway is fine. Post a pic of it.
