last night my overflow got clogged so the top of my tank overflowed a few gallons. i want to put a float switch up there to shut the pump off when the water level is too high. what is a good float switch for this or do you think there is another way to prevent this from happening again?

Either go with that or make your own. Pretty easy to do but for the price, I'd just but one. You have to remember though that a snail can get one of those stuck very easily. I wouldn't rely on that and either make your water return chamber smaller or lower the overflow in your tank so it can't overflow.

I second the autotopoff.com recommendation. For added fault tolerance, order two float switches and wire them in series. If one fail, the second will cut power to your pump!
