So I have a had a golden Dendronephthya for about a month and a half now. I love it. Right now it is on about a baseball sized rock that I take out about every week and put in a small 2 1/2 gallon tank with a power head and add phyto to the tank. I gets all furry and sweet and i let it sit in that tank overnight. But what I want to do is try to cultivate my own phyto so I can maybe add more to my tank water and not have to worry about diluting down the stuff I buy from the LFS over an hour away.
I found a few websites but they fall very short of explaining the process. One I found said just take old tank water and put in a bag by the window when it turns green then you have phytoplankton. I am sure it could be that easy but there has to be more method to the madness. I have a spare 20 gallon tank and a window the basement that gets about 6 hours of sunlight this time of year. I want to make that the tank. I have read lots of articles on the Dendronephthya and they say they need constant feeding to grow well and I don't want to lose this coral it is very cool and the golden yellow it provides the tank is definately and eye catcher.
Thanks in advance
P.S. Just this last week a got a few babies from this if anyone is interested. They are eating already and about the size of finger tips. I've got 4. I was curious where they came from at first but I saw one ready to fall off last night. And this morning the parent was already healed with no signs of any decay or sickness. So I am fairly sure you are getting a healthy golden baby. I'll post pics when I get home and clean the glass.
