Purchased a used OM 4-way and there's quite a of white build up internal to the unit.

Was thinking about dropping it in to some vinegar overnight, wondering if this would be okay (or the best method)?

I do not see that being a problem. Just make sure you remove all the metal pieces first. Not sure if the vinegar would hurt them I would just take the precautaion.

I clean stuff with muratic acid and water.

Some folks don't like muratic acid though. It's some nasty stuff. It cleans powerheads, pvc, etc. completely.

I usually put the item that needs to be cleaned in a plastic masonart bin (made for mixing grout) and dump straight muratic acid on it. I add water after the acid stops boiling a bit. I do this outside of course. It doesn't take much muratic acid but it depends on what you are trying to clean.

Don't breath the fumes. Seriously don't.

that stuff is good stuff. it is what they use to clean concrete and acid wash swiming pools.....

it has a nice yellow color and a pungent fume cloud that forms when it reacts with stuff.

What's done after finished with the acid. Does it need to be neutralized, just rinse with water?

I rinse them very well with plain water and allow them to dry thoroughly.

water neutralizes acid. so lots of water will render it dead.... then run your powerhed in a bucket of water for a few hours to rinse it well, then you are good to go!
