I paid $360 for the $500 Efflo. Looks like I got it for $140 off 8O

Someone paid $422 forn a frag of The War Coral (Favites Pentegona).

Someone paid $376 for a Psychedelic Chalice

These were all Tyree limited editions. They are only worth that amount of money if you think you can sell frags in the future to make your money back. My experience with corals is that they grow like weeds. So you might as well fill your tank with expensive weeds that can make you some money down the road. And the expensive corals are usually very pretty too, so you have something nice to look at.

Something like $30 bux. I'm cheep, I do not mind frags and I have simple taste. I've paid $50 for a clam once.

Wow! You guys are crazy. Lark and I are reading this together and she is glad to know that everything in our tanks was $9.95 or less

Explain to the owner how he can make much more by chopping it up into frags, and that you will perform the service for one free frag. Don't screw it up!

I don't think I've paid more than 50 for a frag. I would go up to 90 maybe for something really special. I don't buy big corals though.

Wow Louey.. wonder if its coincidence but it seems all the expensive pieces you know of come from the same seller on ebay, makes one think if there isn't some artificial price fixing within the hobby.

Most I paid for a coral? Ummm $30 for my Lucious Pink Monti-Cap (see photograph forum) other than that I paid $25 for a couple acan lord colonies .

It really doesn't matter. These limited edition corals sell like hot cakes. You just need the price history to be there to justify your price.

Take the watermelon chalice for example. I'd pay a premium price for one, but can't find one that hasn't already sold.

The price people were getting for Acan's was borderline ridiculous for awhile there.

Supply and demand. There are plenty of people that will pay.

I only have a few pieces that cost over $100.00. Most of my 30 corals cost in the $50 range.

When your aquarium setup cost over $10,000.00, you can more easily justify going ahead and spending a few extra bucks stocking it. ;) Why stock a $10,000 aquarium with $500 worth of corals?

I want to sell corals in the future to help offset the cost of salt and electricity. I think I can do that more successfully with the more expensive corals. I could be wrong.

It's simply just two different approaches to the hobby. There's nothing wrong with wanting only collectible pieces like Louey, and there's nothing wrong with getting LFS pieces for $9.95 like Andy (although I'm sort of against getting wild-caught specimens  ). Louey's got some pricey pieces in his possession, but there's a good reason why they're expensive and considered Limited Editions. They're absolutely stunning.

You really only have to spend some money on Limited Edition pieces in the beginning. I had to start out with $80-$100 frags. Once your colonies are established, than you can just acquire more through trades.

I'm not saying that Limited Edition pieces are the only great looking ones. There's plenty out there. $350 for a colony from a LFS, with no trace or lineage whatsoever, seems a bit much.

Hehe. I've never been a fan of "lineage" or pedigree. If it's attractive and within my budget, I'll pay for it. I'm actually annoyed by all the cutesy pet names (including "Purple Monster") :P

The names get out of control with people naming anything willy nilly just to justify charging more for it.

The names are useful for specifying individual clones though. Maybe someday we'll have a refined system for nomenclature like orchid growers have.

Speaking of cute names, that "watermelon alien-eye" is probably the nicest coral I've seen ever. I have an "almost" one that's pretty nice, but not the real thing by a long shot.

Its funny you don't consider the "$500 Efflo" to be borderline ridiculous ;)

I want to sell corals in the future to help offset the cost of salt and electricity. I think I can do that more successfully with the more expensive corals. I could be wrong.
And that's perfectly fine by my eye. Problem with this mindset is you better hope that its either a fast growing coral or no more are found in large numbers, otherwise as supply rises so does the price. Although I have heard stories of actual price fixing back in the acan uber-fad days by a select group of individuals who were in possession of the only few colonies, etc.

But the naming of them does tend to add to the hype of the coral REGARDLESS of how pretty they are, eg. $500 Efflo? Superman (anything), (Color) People Eaters, Ultra/Very/Extremely Rare (any coral).

The stuff I'm looking for at Atlantis (who never responded to any of my inquiries, so I'll take my money elsewhere) is just nice looking stuff. I don't care for any of the lineage. But it often happens that a lot of these "limited edition" (another pet name I despise :P) corals are some of the prettiest ones.

hmm. They responded to my email last week when I placed my first order with them

The order was recieved and all frags were as advertised and well packaged. I'd do business with them again.

I thought they'd get back to me in a heartbeat. My order was pretty big (multiples of four digits 8O ) but apparently I wasn't important to them ;) There's too many nice corals elsewhere for me to keep trying.
