I forget.. what type of cement do I want to get to make rock structures out of? Will plain quickcrete work minus the gravel?

I'm making a vertical structure of LR that I am going to attach (somehow) to the SIDES of my overflow box in the back of my cube. I need to use somthing substantial to hold the LR segments (that I will break and cut to fit) into place. So what kind of cement? i forget

thanks

IIRC it is portlan cement. You will need to cure it for quite sometime before is leaches out all the crud and becomes stable.

White Portland cement if you can get it. You could also use the great stuff foam insulation to make a fake stone/rock work cover for overflow boxes and/or to hide plumbing.

Omni, are you talking about the yellow foam from great stuff? Does it change it's color or pick up algae/coraline after a while?

And how long until you can put the foam covered stuff back in the tank?

It is also known as type III or fast early cement. It's quite a bit more expensive than type II portland. I think I paid around $9 for type II and about twice that for type III

There's also thorite which doesn't have the pH problems that the standard Portland types have.

I be danged if I can find the thread now, but a guy did a nano tank with greatstuff and small rocks.

The entire back wall and one side were done this way. I dont know if anything will encrust on it or not. Mmm you could sprinkle plastic dust/shavings into it. I know corraline loves plastic/pvc.

But it won't work underwater, right? Like on the overflow box in a filled tank? Seems chemically dangerous and doesn't seem like it would stick...

I'm just going to use 1/4 inch plexiglass and use nylon bolts to bolt into my live rock (with some epoxy to hold it for sure) and make my vertical structure that way.

I'll then simply silicon the structure to the overflow sides :)
