Hey all,

I'm trying to find a place that sells LIVE Mysid shrimp for a reasonable price. Anyone know of one? Or does anyone here have some Mysid shrimp that they would sell to me? I'm talking about the tiny shrimp that run very quickly over the rocks, sand, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will be getting a Dragonette soon and need to give him every fighting chance that I can to keep him well fed.

Thanks in advance!

1. If they do sell it, theu will be over priced and expensive.
2. You can make your own microcrustations by via 'pod pile' or refugium.
3. It is difficult to have a dragonete in a small tank. (55 pounds of rock is min.) The more the better.
4. With time some dragonetes will eat frozen food. I have seen mine eat flakes before. I see them eat frozen MYSIS readily.
5. Make sure that you have no other animals that will compete with its natural food. (Psuedochromis are a good example who do this.)

You dont want to mysis, you want copepods.
Mysis swim constantly, copepods scurry around the glass and substrate.
Only the green mandarin ( beautifull high dorsal fin oil slick looking rainbow colorations with the main color being royal blue) has been proven to eat frozen. The phsycedelic madarin will not. (light to dark green body with a white underbelly and orange with black spots).

I'm sorry guys, I wasn't really asking if I should have them in the tank or not. I would like to get some Mysid shrimps please.

Are you guys trying the Jedi mind trick on me? "You don't want Mysid shrimp!"

Of course I already have a good population of 'pods in the tank and refugium. I just want diversity and more natural plankton.

They wont harm your tank, thats not what I ment.
By your wording I thought you may have been confusing the two was all.

Sorry, it's impossible (for me) to confuse especially amphipods, copepods and isopods from mysid shrimp. My mom studied copepods, amphipods, etc (plankton) for her masters degree in college. :)

IMO Dragonets will not be able to use the Mysid for food because Mysid are nocturnal and very fast. Copepods, Amphipods and Ostracodes are primary foods from what I have seen in my tank.

Actually, at one time, I had a psychodelic (sp) mandarin that I could have sworn was eating the juvenile mysids in the tank. At the time, I had a very healthy and large population of mysid shrimps and they were active throughout the day and night. I know that the hatchlings are pelagic free-swimming larvae, but once they get to a certain age, they are no longer pelagic and become an excellent snack for carnivorous and omnivorous fish.

Well to answer your question the only place I know of online that sells Mysis shrimp is inland aquatics. From a quick glance it looks like they sell them in a pack along with gammarids. You may be able to talk to them and get just mysis though. HTH

I believe http://reedmariculture.com/ also sells live Mysis. I don't know how well Mysis live in reef settings (I seem to recall they really aren't suitable and that you will need to culture them in a seperate tank).

I agree pods (amphipods and copepods) are better foods. They are of the right size for dragonettes to consume.

Thanks for all of your help fellas, but I swear that there is a tropical marine form of Mysid shrimps that maybe get 1/4" long and breed like crazy. I will continue looking and asking around. If anyone has any info, please share it. Thanks!

I had tiny mysis in my tank for years, and I feel that may attribute to able to keep a lonely Mandrain fish for several years without feeding.

Hey SE, what happened to your Mysis shrimp? I had to tear my tank down and get rid of my stuff. Sure wish I could have kept a culture of them somewhere. And yes, I do remember my mandarin eating them quite regularly. He had to sit and wait for them, they are too fast to chase I think.

Get the fuana kit at inland reef. It'll have some mysis, some amphipods, some cocopeds. All good stuff.

Still have them after I reset my tank 4 yrs ago, but two months ago, when the tank cracked, I did not try to save them (bad oversight), and right now, I have only pods but no mysis... at least I can't seem to find them. Will go to a LFS with my trusty mysis sucker and see if I can grab some up and get them to setup a colony in the corner of my tank.

The mysids we sell are perfectly suitable for a marine aquarium Len. They'll do fine. Problem with them is, it's hard to maintain a culture with various stages of growth, due to their high cannabalastic attitudes :D

fyrefish,
I ordered from Reed Mariculture about 1 1/2 yrs ago and I have tons of mysids in my tank. Enough so that if I when I want to introduce them into a new or different tank all I have to do is move one rock. I was very pleased and you will be too.
