I have some macro algae in my 125g reef that is spewing green stuff into the water column right now. I assume this is what I've heard of as asexual reproduction in caulerpa? It seems like it's releasing its chlorophyl because the algae itself is turning a little whiter. Is it actually chlorophyl or is it spores? If it is really asexual reproduction then I would think it was spores.

So, is this a bad thing or a good thing? I've heard it referred to as a bad thing before, but why? Would the green cloud/chlorophyl/spores be good for the filter feeders? Or would it be considered excess nutrient release? Will the algae continue to live or will it die off?

Sorry about all the Q's, but I'm really curious. I'm not too concerned though. I have a PM Bullet2 protein skimmer which should clear it up soon.

Thanks for any answers anyone can provide.

No. This is sexual reproduction. You should video it and sell it as reef-porn.

Keep the skimmer running and if there is a lot, you might want to rip out some of the stuff turning white. It can cause oxygen depletion, so keep a close eye on it. Usually only a little goes at a time.

ok thanks! I never would have thought about o2 depletion. It's only a small clump of algae and it's already clearing.
