I got a new fish a week or so ago. When I got him he was very skinny and fresh from a shipment form Vietnam supposedly. Since putting him in the tank he has been eating greedily flakes and nori and nibbling on the rocks and glass as well. How long would a fish last if it was caught by cyanide? When is he in the clear? I don't know that he was caught by that method, but because he was so sunken in and skinny when he arrived, I kind of assumed the worst. Since then he has fattened up and appears happy. Am I stressing over nothing or is he not out of the clear?

No telling really. Honestly, it's most likely starved. Cyanide caught usually die, or live. There's not much in the middle for it. Most are culled thru the COC way before you can get it ;)

So, theoretically, since he is eating well and acting normal he should be in the clear, correct?

I'd say it'll take several weeks > month to tell if it'll fully recoverred from being starved. In many cases, a starved fish will eat, but never put on weight and eventually dies. Not saying this is your case, but rather, what happens sometimes.

I'd suspect a blue line angel, if it's from Vietnam. They don't ship much else typically, other then clams.
