Stick with Zebrasoma and Ctenochaetus, and get a small specimen (under 2" is ideal). I know some will say a ~60 gallon is too small. I personally think one small tang will do fine in your tank, provided you have plans for relocating it when it grows (e.g. moving to your 120g).

Purple is pretty nasty and the Lavender gets to about 10 in long so I wouldn't really go with either. Honestly, in a tank that size, you're best off going with a Kole Tang or a Yellow Tang. The Lavender Tangs are not part of the Ctenochaetus (bristletooth) family. They are actually part of the Acanthurus family (the same faimly as Powder Blue, Achilles, etc...). If you must have a tang, go with the Kole or Yellow. Personally though, I think 60 gallons is too small for any tang.

I have done quite a bit of research, basically every tang gets 10"+ the only ones i have read that do well in smaller tanks are Kole,Yellow, and Scopas. this was a nice article on the scopas and got me interested, not a pretty fish, but something different, has irridescence to him http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/Fish.htm

Hmm - I have been wondering this myself since I dont have much of a choice on fish locally.

A tomini was recommended but I have not seen one locally. Would a purple tang be OK in a 58G for a while?

I not recommend it, the larger ones tank the better when it comes to this fish>

Good advice in this thread IMO.

Personally I'd stick with the Kole as it's the smallest and most mild mannered of the group. Yellows and Scopas can be a bit nasty - especially when cramped for space.

Tomini, tomini, tomini :D

I wish I could get one :( Finding one can be challenging, but I think it's prettier than the Kole tang, and also has a smaller max. size

I have never seen a Tomini local and I asked and they said they do not get them.

I went and got a small Scopas last night. If this fish appears too stressed or grows too big I will get rid of it. It is about 1-1.5 inches currently. It ate food while I was at the LFS and moved around in the LFS tank fine.

I am crossing my fingers this one makes it.
