I don't want to contaminate my tank with things that may have been left over during shipping and what not. What should I use to clean my tank, buckets and other equipment? Is a freshwater bath good enough for this or do I need something more like vinegar perhaps?

Freshwater should be enough, really. But if you're concerned, do use vinegar and a soft sponge and make sure you throughly rinse it out with water. Set buckets and sponges aside from the start and don't use them for anything but the tank.

I do a rinse in hot water for things that I purchased new, like a protien skimmer or whatnot.

For anything that needs to be cleaned of visible crud, I soak or spray white vinegar on it, and scrub it in hot water.

Siphon tubes, water change bucket, ect. I rinse with tap water.
