I know a canister filter can be a nitrate factory but is there any way to set it up so that its not bad?

My dad wants to have a fish only tank, is a canister filtration system sufficient?

Thanks!

I setup marine tanks with canisters back in the day, but they were never the only filter. For tanks with messy fish like groupers, they make a good supplemental mechanical filter.

Live rock is always the best way to go for biological filtration.

I'd put carbon and purigen in it, and clean them often for detritus build up. ;)

I use nitrate and phospate removal media in mine. I only feed it preskimmed cleanish water to minimize detritus buildup.

Just clean the thing out and you'll be fine. I only use my one week out of the month these days, but even when I used it continuously, my nitrates dropped. I'd use carbon 3 weeks of the month, cleaning it out each week, and then use a micron filter the last week, which helps keep the water nice and crystal clear.
