Which wavemaker, which pumps.

I have plenty of glow in my 100g (he thinks) but I have Tunze pumps that are not the type that go with their controller.

I was thinking of adding a cheaper pump; maybe a Hydor Koralia or two and wondered if they are controllable with some type of wave-maker? Some of these wavemakers seem pretty affordable and with some relatively cheap high flow pumps, it would be an affordable and easily changeable setup.

If anyone has alternate ideas, I'd like to hear them.

I have two MJ mods on a JBJ wavemaker (alternates with periods of up to 6 minutes). Works pretty well for me. I had the same problem as you and I finally got sick of my Tunzes getting frozen by calcium buildup and simply replaced them with the MJ mods.

Do the MJ Mods start up cleanly everytime? I've been reading about clattering on startup of some pumps.

The koralias seem OK but I don't think they are fully controllable right now (I have heard of people using Seio controllers with them, though) but a Hydor controller is in store, so I hear. But they are pretty big!

The other pumps pictured are the Tunze Nanostreams which could also be an option for you. Smaller but a little more money.

Nano would be super and I'll consider it certainly. Do they only work with Tunze controllers?

One of the models works with the controller. I believe it is the 6055.

One thing I forgot to mention is this: The koralia can be controlled to so the flow goes low to high. The Nanostreams can be controlled so it comes on and off. AFAIK, vice-versa DOES NOT apply.

You seem to know your stuff about these powerheads. I just fired up my two koralias and the JBJ wave maker isnt going to cut it due to the chatter. Do you know where I can get a SEIO wave maker?

I had that problem, but after reading the FAQ on them, I found out that all you need to do is grind down the props a bit. I haven't had a problem since (It did reduce the flow a bit, but hey, it still pushing some good water!).

Im all for DIY mods. I cant physically see what grinding down the props will do to help. Can you explain the reasoning and the process to me?

The pump does not have the power to push the water from the prop, causing it to "think" it is stuck and it then switches directions (hence, the *clack clack clack*). When you grind it down, you reduce the water you are pushing and in turn, the power needed to turn the prop. The pump no longer thinks it is stuck and no longer tries to change directions.

So, in short. When the pump fires up and the impeller is rotating in reverse it stays in reverse?

No it can do this at any point while running. The *clanking* comes from the prop hitting the acrylic rod stopper and going back into forward gear. There simply seems to be a threshold level where the pump thinks it is stuck and switches directions. With the original prop, I seemed to be very close to this threshold. With the one I ground down, I am well below it.

I ended up ordering a wavysea. I figure I'll move my return to the middle back of the tank and sweep 180 Degrees. Also, it avoids putting in more pumps... and it looks like my limited diy capabilities will find it easy to install. Kind of pricey but cool. Should give me the "chaotic flow" I want.
