Unless the aquarum is being fed water from the ocean (open loop, water in, water out) then it is a closed loop, meaning that what water is in the system simply recirculates within the system. I think...lol

In aquariums closed loop refers to a system of water circulation involving an external pump. Water from an overflow drains down to a pump which delivers it back to the display tank though one or more outlets. Unlike sumps, which filter and process water before returning it to the display tank, closed loops are strickly for the sake of circulation and are usually used in conjuction with sumps in larger systems.

Ok I'll go with explanation #3 :D

A closed loop is one to where all the water stays within a "loop" of piping, and doesn't have a chance to "wander" (in the case as sump/overflow does). Typically you'd have an external pump connected directly to the tank via piping, that pump sucks water straight from the tank, and the output is PVC back into the tank, either through a manifold along the top, or sometimes directly through nozzles in the back/side/under the tank maybe with some sort of water switching device (OceanMotion, etc)

I think I can make it even simplier.

Closed loop = water circulates within the aquarium in a "closed" loop. Meaning it just loops around the aquarium as opposed to moving to sumps, other tanks, and so forth.

Most of the time people drill 3-6 holes in the back of the tank for a returns. A pump in fed the water from the aquarium and just squirts it out those varous returns. It generally serves only one purpose... circulation.

eh, Why talk, when I got a picture!

edit: found a typo. The 'outs to pump" at the top of the pic should say 'outs to tank"

By the time I set up the closed loop with the Eheim 1262 pump, the OM 4-way, the bulkheads, ball valves, lock line and other fittings, i could have set up a vortec with a battery backup, and not have to worry how I'm going to clean the pump now it's against the wall...

alright. it is what i thought.
how do you use a setup as above, always been a visual learner, and create an oscillating current? or is constant stream all that is available without crazy money equipment....

The grey cylinder straight above his pump where the plumbing splits into 4 directions is an "Ocean's Motions" brand rotating valve.

how many holes do i need in the back of my tank?
--given a 48x15x20ish tank
1 overflow outlet
1 sump return
1 outlet to closed pump
? return from closed pump
i would prefer to have as few holes in my "water container" as possible....

You need zero. The above picture has 3, but none are necessary.

correct. Since I have a standard glass tank I have zero holes drilled in the back of my tank. I do however, have two closed loop intakes along with over 16 locline returns. :)

If you take a look at page six of my 120 build thread there are more pics of a CL system. Everything you see behind and in the tank is CL related.

A canister is a good example of a closed loop without holes in the tank. Replace the canister with just a pump and there ya go.

for a 62 gallon like yours, just buy a vortec. Easier to use, and you can get a battery backup for the pump.

You could use a SQWD for $30 or so and get variable flow. But they take quite a bit of flow away from the pump.

Rich is correct. the grey cylinder is the Ocean's Motions Super Squirt. there's a motor on top that spins a drum inside the unit. Two pipes are on at a time, and two are off. I have it set so the opposite corners are on at the same time. And I hate the noise from the motor. It's by far the loudest thing on my tank. My tank is in my living room and I will pull the plug on the OM if i'm watching a movie.

I have one of the orignally vortechs on my tank, wonder if they can change it to the version with wave modes...eitehr way its a great pump that takes like no space in your tank compaired to other pumps in its class.
