Was it necessary to break it?

Yes, the core barrel is only 18", and without breaking it cleanly, it will break on its own, spin in the core barrel and grind away years.

So, you cored 48 inches of something white.

I have drilled over 11' of a black substance, will that disprove global warming?

He's showing me the core of a large coral head that died back in... the '80s I believe. This core sample may provide the kind of data the global warming naysayers insist we don't have, the kind that may demonstrate that it is human activity, and SOLELY human activity, that has spurred this latest warming event.

Have I got that even partially right, Chris? I haven't done a wake & bake today.

You're too sexy with your cores, too sexy for your cores so sexy it hurts. :D (Ok, that was lame, but that song just popped into my head, and out it came.)

Do corals like that have something analogous to growth rings, so you can tell age and good years vs bad years?

Yes. Density bands visible by x rays. The bands don't do much aside from provide an independent age control. Some species show stress bands from events. Some show ash layers from volcanic eruptions. A random example from google:

What is that green line Chris? I've seen it on plenty of massive corals like that one.
