Expensive I know, but I'm thinking about automating my tank just a bit to include an ATO/Kalkwasser system. I keep my ca/ALK pretty level using kalk, so using some sort of topoff with it makes sense. Ph has minimal swings as I've got a 'fuge on a reverse 24 which is working well so far.

I've used the good old gravity drip method but the new tank (because of the open top and light) has more evap than ever and winter is coming-damn dry air. With my schedule including 24-36hrs away from the house I want something almost bomb proof.

Any thoughts? Oh, and don't bother to say I can DIY one  as a few people here know I'm not good with equipment. Okay, so I can't parallel park a car either

Well I also cannot parallel park a car, and the Tunze Osmolator is wonderful. I own two, and they've been nothing short of fantastically reliable and accurate. Do you have any particular questions about it?

Also, fwiw, I've fiddled with the 2 ATO bottles that come with your Solana and was never able to get them to work reliably. I tried slowly enlarging the holes in the caps, and if they didn't drain all at once then they didn't drain at all. I think a constant water level would help you get the most out of that skimmer.

I agree with Craig. I loved mine on my last tank, it worked a dream. The only problem I had was the motor on the top-up pump failing because I allowed kalkwasser to seep into it (you can avoid this happening if, when you set it up, you place the motor and reservoir above the flask containing the kalk). It was relatively cheap to replace though.

I just checked out the Osmolator. Looks like a sweet ATO. I use a similar unit from JBJ but the mounting options are much nicer on the Tunz unit. I have to be away from my display for extended periods so and ATO is essential. I also invested in a controller from Digital Aquatics to control the other equipment in the tank and have been very happy with it.

I currently run the water a lot higher than the stock setup due to the skimmer working much better tht way, it now wet skims the way I want it to. See now I've tried the same with the top off bottles, even had a friend who works with acrylic make a new insert with a bigger bottle, etc. Very disappointed in that facet of the tank. So, knowing the back of the Solana, will both the float and the electric eye of the Tunze unit fit in there? It looked like it should.

I think they will fit. They only need about a 2"x1" footprint to fit inside. I'll take a closer look when I go to work on Monday; we have one set up at the shop.

How high is your water in that first chamber? We should probably consider raising ours to get better performance out of the skimmer. It sounds like that has worked well for you.
