recirc skimmer VS non recirc skimmer Octopus

What do you all think. Does a larger non recirc skimmer out preform a smaller recirc skimmer. Whats the general idea/concensus here. Im looking to get a new skimmer for my 40BR SPS dominated tank. im either getting the

OR

I choose a recirculating design, strictly for the ability to gravity feed it.

But if you dont gravity feed or tee off the drain and feed it to the skimmer and sump then do you feel that the regular NWrecirc is a better choice

IMO/IME whatever pump injects more air is better regardless off design. I don't buy into that whole chopping bubbles finely stuff These bubbles appear to be the same size on either design at the throat if a comparable amount of air is injected.

A pump on a recirculating design is much less affected by head pressure than the same pump on a non-recirc path and it will therefore pump more air. Furthermore, a recirculating skimmer gives you the option of regulating contact time with the skimmer bubbles. My vote goes to recirculating skimmers. Whatever you decide, a decent skimmer on a 40 gallon tank should work well either way.

i used to have the recirc 150 on my 50 breeder ...it worked fairly well......still need to mod the pump for better performance...

for a recirc..look into a DAS EX-1

and a in sump...MSX 160 (but out of stock at the moment.)

but theres still alot of other good choices too....so keep researching....most of these skimmers are more than enough for a 40g

at the moment im thinking the same as Jackson. the pump on the 150 is twice the size of the one on the recirc 110. In my case i think the the 150 will do a better job for me.

if your looking into the in-sump 150...
then i would go with the msx 160...its the knockoff of the BM...but also uses the sicce pumps......large neck...bubble diffusor....wedge type water adjustment instead of a standpipe...

you will need to mod the venturi on the octo pumps to pull some serious air....

how did you mod the octo pump. also the recirc comes with the gate valve so thats one reason the recirc 110 is still in the running

i had to drill out the air intake to a bigger hole and changed out the flimsy air hose...
alot of people also hone out the whole intake of the pump for better flow...
also mesh modded the impeller...

i think the new design of the octopus has the bubble plate. not sure if thats on all of them.

I got this one about 1 month ago and it is great .Octopus Premium Extreme TS150 Protein Skimmer came with the plate and i think its suppost to be similar to the bubbel kings in design

Hi where did you get your skimmer? I am looking for TS150 or PS 150. Couldnt find anywhere. Also any difference between TS 150 and PS 150?

im going to get one of these because they are in my affordable price range. But which one i cant decide i keep bouncing back and fourth.
Im also not sure about the new design for the feed line on the recirc if you look it goes into the pump, doesnt that defeat the purpose of the recirc since its no longer strictly being used for recirc.
