For those of you that do not live on the ground floor, how do you guys deal with the potential for water flooding your apartment and possibly the apartments below? Like what would you do if the tank or seals cracked? or if you forget to turn off your RODI for the night.
After my 20 gallon accident last year i'm pretty paranoid about moving to upper floors of an apartment, but i need to move and the only places available are at least on the second floor. So are there any nice ways to keep my mind at ease? besides medication?

As for topoff, I use Tunze's Osmolator. My floors are concrete covered by hardwood, so the possibility of flooding my downstairs neighbor is low. Maybe I should consider adding a policy rider to my home owner's insurance plan

Beyond that, there's little you can do if the tank cracks or leaks.

i had the same problem before. idid a couple of things.(not in that order)

1.i bought a tunze osmolator
2. i use plastic or metal clamps for all my barbs
3. i drilled anti siphon hole into my plumbing
4. i have one output line coming out of my rodi. i switch between my ro reservoir and brute container . which both are equipped with kent marine float valves. i fall asleep all the time while making Ro water.

the only thing i can not protect against is the tank busting at the seams.
the only water that has gotten on the floor was me being clumsy during a water change

Well I run my RODI in the bathtub so no danger of flooding. My wife only tolerates that situation because we're looking to close on a home where I'll have the WHOLE BASEMENT TO MYSELF.

As for leaking I picked up several of these water eaters at Harriet Carter and though you'd need a ton to aborb all the water I have them lining the inside of my stand and especially around my ballast which is on the floor.

If it was a slow leak that would buy me some time but I don't ever want to know how much.

If you wanted to get crazy there are environmental control units for IT server rooms that integrate with your phone line and will call you if there is ever water on the floor or a temp surge.

Yeah I wish I could steal some of the leak detection cables from our data center.

Thanks! I almost forgot that newer buildings should have concrete floors that'll make leaking down the floors a little less likely.

I've seen used models of ours (can't remember off hand) on ebay for a couple hundred bucks. Considering the money I'll spend on my new tank when we get a house I may invest in a older, used model.

If your tank cracks I'd feel more bad for you than for your neighbor. You know how I put my mind at ease (living on the top floor of a seven story building)? I don't care! Simple but effective method. lol

Tanks cracking or leaking is a big reason why I switched my large fish tanks over from glass to acrylic. Even though they could leak, or even exploded, they're much more solid than a glass tank.

I've also have my auto-top setup so it can only put so much water into my sump, which in the end wouldn't be enough to over flow it. It does make more work for me, as I have to fill the container up more often, but at least I don't have to worry about it. Also my stand can actually hold water, about 5 gals, without it leaking out onto the floor.

It also helps that I live on the first floor, with wood over concrete like Dean, and I have nobody under me. If my big tanks do crack they'll probably flood the elevator shaft or motor room, so no real damage. And yes it's a good idea to get insurance, not only for your items but other people's and the building too.

I dont know but for the cost of an apartment I know a guy who has a beautiful 2 floor condo for sale about a mile from where u live now. U could consider buying that and put your mind at ease Just another option. Or just find aother building where u can get a place on the first floor less stairs to carry groceries and furniture also.

Well basically I wasn't too worried about the tank but more along the line of the resulting water damage to the below floors. I had to pay over $1,000 to fix the damage from the last accident. And if i lived in an upper floor in a building that wasn't so water proof that number would quickly multiply.

Hahaha, Sorry no raise this year yet, can't really afford much. Which is one reason i'm moving. Plus i'm considering moving to an area that has a higher density of fun activities per square mile than Bergen County has.

I live on the sixth floor of an apartment building. When I upgraded to a 75 gallon freshwater aquarium (reef tank is up and coming) I got rental insurance with good liability coverage. I specifically asked if it would cover liability for water damage from the aquarium and the broker said yes. I haven't really read it in detail, but hopefully she's right.
