Alk, Cal, Mag, and Trates. Only use to do them when I saw something wrong. Now trying to do them more frequent as to avoid animals going through any kind of unnecessary suffering.;)

calcium, magnesium and alkalinity every three days. i made a few new clam additions so im trying to get an idea of my tanks dosing requirement.

after i figure it out then its every water change (every one or two weeks more likely) i test for calcium, alkalinity, magnesium

then nitrate, nitrite ammonia, etc only when there is a problem

I normally just do the eyeball test. If something looks wrong, then I'll pull out the test kits.

I haven't done nitrate tests in 3 years. Cal, Alk and Mg are the only ones I use.

i like the name of that the eyeball test.. only i do the eye ball test and dont even bother testing if it seems like someting is wrong do a water change.

but if i was going to test i would do alk, calc, mag, and ph if i though any others were in neednothing a water change couldnt fix

i think the eyeball test maty ctually be a better test. because your test kit could resd good and there could obvilously still be a visiable problem. and even though some of your test might not read perfect. that doesnt mean there is a problem with the water because no one truly knows the exact levels needed in sea water. sinecew they are chANGING ALL THE TIME ANY WAY.
