So I received a bunch of green star polyps from a fellow MR reefer. They came in a plastic bag and had been in transit for approx 2 days. When I opened the bag, all the pieces were completely gray, and it smelled like something was decaying in there. So, I acclimated and put them into the my tank. Over time, they developed some kind of gray film so this morning i put them in direct flow of the powerheads which got rid of it but the polyps still won't come out. I can see some small green dots which is where polyps should be coming out of but overall the mat is gray. The gsp are at the top of my live rock so they are very close to the light and I put them in direct flow, like 2 inches away from the powerheads. Any tips to reviving these guys?

Thanks.

I will post up my water chemistry stats later.

just time.... the gsp skin should turn a purple color. Always acclimate ur corals aswell. Never start them from the top. Start from the bottom, and over the course of a week bring them to the middle, then to the top.

yes they need light and when coral is not in light it looses it zoanthellie, which is like cytoplasim and clorphyll. It is what makes the coral color up. just start off slow cause they have to get used to the light so they can create new zoanthellie, that also portects the coral from getting burnt from the light

How much time? It does make sense since being a bag without any light would have a great impact on them.

BINGO!!! usually within a few days they should open up a little more. Pretty hardy coral. It also depends on how pristine your water conditions are aswell that will help in there recovery.

New york actually LOL!

So should I leave them on the top part of the tank or lower? Not sure if im supposed to expose them to direct light or keep them further away on the ground

I've had a few different GSP colonies before - they definitely don't need intense light, low but direct lighting works well. Mine also likes high flow, but at the same time I wouldn't put them directly in the path of a powerhead.

Like what everyone else is saying GSP are very hardy. The only time to really give up is when the mat has started to peel off the rock, which would truly indicate that the colony is either partially or completely dead.

I got the frags in wierd shapes.. they look like worm shapes to be exact. and then there are like these "tongue" things sticking out of the sides. How am I supposed to glue them to my rock?

A lot of times, they are ripped out of rocks because they spread fast. The GSP would look a carpet roll.. You can glue them to rocks or tie them with some fishing lines... Within time, they will grow over the rocks and attached themselves. To start with, you just need a good water flow and some lighting.

The "skin" of my gsp is grey and always has been since i got them about 2 1/2 years ago. Be careful where you put this stuff as it grows like a weed and will take over your entire tank encrusting corals and all your rock lol! im going to frag mine out and get rid of most of it after an upgrade because it takes over everything. Try and keep it seperate from any rock piles you have or youll be sorry :P

EDIT: i have mine growing on the back wall in extreme direct flow and its doing great, i also have some on the bottom with little or almost no flow and its doing just as well, and third i have a piece in medium flow thats doing good to. i woudnt worry to much about the flow. get them used to the light and it will take off.If your close to me you can have some free if yours dosnt do well because of shipping just ask :)
