I'm going to setup a frag tank(either a 20gallon or 40gallon breeders)....and have a question on setting it up. Eventually my goal is to grow out sps frags and move the corals out of my main system out so that I can replace them with the sps frags that have grown out).

Would you t off of the return and drain back into the main sump or would you t off of one the drains ( I have 2 1.5" drains) and drain into the main sump?

The other question is would you use a true union ball valve to regulate flow or any cheap home depot ball valve?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Ernie, I'm in the process of doing the same. I am building a manifold for the main pump and having the water go into the frag tank and the overflow will go into the main sump. This way I will only have to add the supplements to a main sump. In addition I will have one reactor, one skimmer etc.. I thought it would keep things easier.

Alex: Thanks.

Do you think it's necessary to build a manifold? I am just going to place a T on the return line with a ball valve most likely true union and dump that into the frag tank which in turn will drain into the main sump.

I think it's easier for me since I have an inwall and my return line is over the top so I just need to T off at the highest level e.g. with the top of the frag tank.

Also do you think I can get away with 1 150MH with LED Lumen Max 2 pendant over the 40 breeder if I place the frags in the center? I will not get coverage on the end 6" either way.

I don't see it as a problem as long as you have some circulation, try a small powerhead. I doing a manifold because it was easier for me to do. As for the lights sounds good, should get some nice growth with that lighting. I'm going with a 6 bulb T5 fixture or a diy 8 bulb. The tank is the marineland 45 cube so I wanted to get the most out of the area without the heat of MH.
