  1. halimeda crash?

Could be. I got some red leafy algae (looks like kelp) that does that. buds form on the leaves then the leaf turn yellowish green and the buds pop off. But usually it's just a few leaves. This whole thing went starch white.
  2. halimeda crash?

did yours all crash at once? I dont think theres a lack of nutrients in my tank (although I wish there was).
  3. halimeda crash?

I've kept a large bunch of halimeda in my 55g for about 3 months then overnight it all turned white. Looks weird. Im gonna remove it but has anyone seen this happen before? Other macros been in tank for years no problem
  4. Tank Temps

I keep mine set at 78. In the winter I think its better to have higher temps. My rationale is if the power goes out and no ones around, it'll take longer before it gets dangerously cold. But keep in mind higher temps means higher consumption rate and waste = NO3.
  5. Algae problem

It looks like caulerpa taxifolia to me... but then again there are sooo many types of caulerpa it's hard to be sure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caulerpa_taxifolia

  8. PSA: Tropic Marin Pro Reef

Thanks thats great info! I've been using tropic marin pro-reef for at least a year and couldn't figure out why my alk was always tanking. I was reading like 2 meq/l after a water change before adding dKh buffer. Once buffer is added it stabilizes. I just figured it was being used up real...
  9. Help with Tank

Your nitrates and phosphates are locked up in the algae biomass. Could your tank be getting external light that extends the photoperiod?

  12. Fishing on Long Island?

The Sea Otter ( http://www.seaotterfishing.com/main ) out of Montauk has open boat trips during the winter. They target cod, blackfish, pollock, hake, and ling. I've gone on a few striped bass fishing trips with them in the fall and always produce. Never tried the winter fishing but I hear...
  13. silicone sealant question

The tank was given to me by a friend about 6mos ago. He had it setup as a fowlr. He never let the tank sit dry nor did I except during the move which lasted about 4hrs. Here's a pic of the side which seems to be the worst (not the algae the sealant!). I promise to do my housekeeping this...
  14. silicone sealant question

Hi everyone... This is my first post but I have been lurking for a while and learned tons on reefkeeping. Question - On my tank I noticed the silicone is peeling off in some corners. It's an All-Glass Aquarium 55 gallon tank that is about 3 years old. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
