I also have tons of these little snails and they are harmless. I asked what they were at one time but I forgot the answer. All I remember is that I was told they are harmless and many people have them.

Its not that the return pipe its self is too small its that return pump is not big enough.

duct tape comes to mind :) I would just reseal it with whatever you used in the first place.

Sounds like you are in need of a bigger overflow like a duel box.
