  1. disaster recovery

great idea! It didn't occur to me to take the ballast to the LFS for testing.
  2. disaster recovery

I went on vacation - 5 days. Before leaving, I set up an auto-topoff, testing to make sure it would work. I turned off the lights, too. I returned to find that the auto topoff had failed, miserably, and my 55 gallon tank was about 5 gallons low. The intake of one powerhead was out of the water...
  3. not aiptasia after all

I agree, some sort of coral. Yesterday, I got a glimpse of it fully inflated, with skeleton barely visible. The flesh looked sort of red-orange, with a raised portion in the center that was light yellow - a mouth?
  4. Something's eating my sea stars!

No, not possible. My tank has been set up at my place since August 5. I add top-off water twice daily to avoid big swings in salinity.
  5. Something's eating my sea stars!

8O Help! I bought a 55 gallon second-hand reef tank from the lfs. It is approximately 2-3 years old, and it came with live rock, about 3" of crushed coral, lots of zoas, mushrooms, aiptasia, mojanos, and one blue damsel. There is at least one small bristle worm, and one mystery critter. The...
  6. not aiptasia after all

I hope it does turn out to be a jewel. As of now, though, it doesn't have much color. I looked up the Pseudocorynactics and the photo showed green tips on the tentacles, and the base not being visible. Whatever it is, it appears to be going strong.

  8. not aiptasia after all

Yes, the tentacles retract completely at times.
  9. not aiptasia after all

When I first saw this little guy, I thought it was aiptasia. However, it was the only one like it in the tank. The others were brown. After a while, I noticed the yellow/tan coloration at the base and began to suspect it to be some sort of coral. It is small, with tentacles extended it...
  10. How to troubleshoot a skimmer

The skimmer is a couple of years old, and it has not been cleaned that I know of. It was running at the fish store, taken down and brought immediately to my house and started back again immediately. There is a knob to turn to adjust the air flow, and I have tried adjusting it but it doesn't...
  11. How to troubleshoot a skimmer

Yes, it's making bubbles. it's almost as though they don't make it to the top though, or the flow isn't strong enough to keep it going.
  12. How to troubleshoot a skimmer

I've had my "new" reef tank for about 3 weeks now. It's 55 gallon (undrilled) with 3-4" sand bed, live rock, soft corals, one blue damsal, and some snails and hermit crabs. Oh, and plenty of aiptasia and cyanobacteria. I bought it used - it was in this condition when i got it. If my test...
  13. I've never seen an electric bill this large

I've had my reef tank less than a week. I bought an established (used) tank last weekend. I didn't consider the electric bill at the time. Yesterday, it was 108 here and it looks like the heat is here to stay for a while. As a joke, my bf made up a photo of me holding a sign that says "Will...
  14. I've done it now!

Thanks for the warm welcome, folks! :D Snowman, yes, it does have a canister filter. I have removed the bio balls, and sponge from the filter and use it strictly for water movement. It has a LOT of algae, and I suspect the filter may be partly at fault. A cleanup crew is the top of my...
  15. I've done it now!

I've been keeping fish off and on most of my life, over 30 years. A couple of years ago, I had a reef tank for 8 months before selling it due to a move. I sold it because I knew I'd be unsettled for a while and I didn't want to take a chance on damaging it and its inhabitants. It is still...
