  1. The sand is in - now what?

No salt water in the tank yet. I know I am not going to fill the tank with the first batch of water (50g) - going to mix SW water 2 or 3 times. When I bought the LR, it was already cured. It has been sitting in my rubbermaid stock tank for 6 months already with all sorts of life in it.
  2. The sand is in - now what?

I dumped about 5 1/2 bags of Southdown into the 135g tank yesterday and started mixing a first batch of water in the sump (about 50g). I have cured LR with live sand sitting in a 50g rubbermaid waiting for the tank. After the first batch of water in the sump is at a proper temp and salinity...
  3. Ready to start making water for a new tank - question

I am ready to start mixing salt water for my 135g with a 75g sump in the basement. I am going to use Southdown for my DSB. I already have LR and sand in a rubbermaid stock tank ready to go. What is the correct way to transfer the rock and the sand into the tank? Here's what I was thinking...
  4. Looking for ways to quite the drain

I have 2 1" drains going into the basement sump and afraid that all the bubbling and gurgling noise is going to cause a lot of complaints from my wife and kids since the sump room is right below the bedrooms. It's not as noticeable during the day, but at night, it's another story. Submerging the...
  5. Refugium plumbing question

What is a grow out tank? You're talking to a newbie who is setting up his first tank (135g). So are you saying that my planned out new plumbing will work?
  6. Refugium plumbing question

When I was testing the plumbing with the 2" drain PVC, the 26g sump was able to handle the flow w/o a problem. Originally, I bought the 26g as my main sump and plumbed the skimmer to it. When I started to test the system, it turned out that the water was being sucked out of the sump completely...
  7. Refugium plumbing question

I drew a rough diagram of what I want to do. Will this work?
  8. Refugium plumbing question

I have to redo my drain plumbing completely because of all the drain noise caused by hard PVC. Currently, both 1" overflows tee under the stand into 2" PVC. In the basement, the drain splits to the refugium and the sump. Current setup I want to run 2 1" flex PVC pipes all the way down into the...
  9. Holy drain noise batman!

KFH, I tried something similar by adding a gate valve at the sump discharge and closing it in increments. I got to a point where it was closed half way and the noise did not quite down at all. I didn't want to restrict the flow any more than that.
  10. Holy drain noise batman!

Dan, Yes, I do. In fact, I drilled a hole on the side of the cap so that it can be adjusted by turning the cap. Any suggestions on how to modify the drain plumbing in order to silent the flow? Should I cut the plumbing and run a 1" PVC from both overflows, joining them at the 2" union with a T...
  11. Holy drain noise batman!

I just drilled a hole in the side of the cap and inserted an RO/DI tubing just to see if it will quite it somewhat... didn't do a thing. I guess my next thing would be to cut the drain plumbing under the stand and run 1" PVC from both bulkheads, have it tee somewhere and into a 2" union in the...
  12. Holy drain noise batman!

I will definitelly try that. What do I tap the hole with - what kind of threads? I should have mentioned that I do have the dursos in my overflows (if that makes any difference).
  13. Holy drain noise batman!

I can drill a hole the size of the tubing and silicone it in.
  14. Holy drain noise batman!

You're suggesting that I drill a hole in the cap and run an airline (such as RO/DI tubing) above the tank? The exit in the basement is below water level. I will try raising it above water level.
  15. Holy drain noise batman!

Last night I started testing my plumbing for leaks and adjust the flow. The flow noise under the tank in the stand sounds like Niagara Falls - reminds me of the sound you hear in the basement pipes when someone is taking a shower or flushes a toilet. Is it because I used a 2" PVC pipe from the...
