  1. Richard Harker in Chicago to speak at Sep 18th CMAS meeting

The first CMAS meeting of the season is tomorrow, Sep 18th at the Schaumburg Library. Please note that this meeting is at 1:30 because of a scheduling conflict at the library. Richard Harker is coming to talk to us about how coral reefs evolve and why coral reefs grow as they do. He will then...

Chicagoland Marine Aquarium Society (CMAS) regular monthly meeting is 1pm this Saturday at the Schaumburg Public Library. Drs. Swap meet is tomorrow. If you are in the area stop by!
  4. Propagating kneyan tree coral help

Kenya Tree (capnella) produces so many babies for us that I've never considered cutting it. Little pieces routinely disattach and end up all over the tanks--requires occassional "weeding". Other softies (Colt, Sinularia, etc) I've cut many times and never had a problem. HTH, jim b
  5. CMAS (Chicago): Dec 13th Swap Meet

Remember our regular monthly meeting for December is the _2nd_ Saturday, Dec 13th, due to the holidays. December meeting is the annual Swap Meet. Bring frags, old equipment, etc to swap. Swapping for dollars is OK, but no dealers. You don't have to be a member to attend, but the $15 membership...
  6. Ushio vs. Coralvue M/H bulbs.

Ninong- Sanjay does more than one kind of test. IIRC, for bulbs he uses the spectroradiometer. When he tests reflectors (pattern and intensity at different heights, with different bulbs) I think he uses the Apogee and is just testing for total PAR. But now that I think about this thread it is...
  7. Ushio vs. Coralvue M/H bulbs.

Sanjay Joshi also uses the Apogee meter for his tests. He has a chart showing the measurement error across the normal spectrum for each meter. I don't recall if this was based on his measurements or info from the two manufacturers. The difference was quite notable, especially at the low end...
  8. Long distance split co2 lines

Thanks Loule. That makes sense. When he said "another application" I just didn't get it, as I coudln't think of any reason to use CO2 in a tank except for a calcium reactor. Duh, I forgot about freshwater and plants--shows where my focus is:-) jim
  9. Long distance split co2 lines

Do I understand you are going to run 2 tanks from one Calcium Reactor? Unless they share a sump you won't be putting all the water back into the tank that it came from--assuming your reactor works like mine. I've been thinking of doing something like this but figured I'd have to get 2 reactors...
  10. Ferdinand Cruz coming to Chicago, Oct. 18th

I forgot to hit "submit" after editing my last post. That was moments after I wrote it but I suspect it is confusing now that is has changed. Here is what I added: BTW, looks like the next need is for plastic jars to hold the fish (as opposed to plastic bags used by others). Marty and I were...
  11. Ferdinand Cruz coming to Chicago, Oct. 18th

I got the impression that the net caught fish were going to Europe and China. (I didn't really understand China as I wouldn't expect high prices there, I've heard before that Europe is a more lucrative market). Ferdinand did acknowledge the net donations and was very grateful for the netting...
  12. Ferdinand Cruz coming to Chicago, Oct. 18th

Yes, good turnout and netting seems to be getting to the right people. I learned alot more about netting and Ferdinand's take on the whole thing is a little different than everyone elses. Even he and Steve Robinson have different analysis of cost/benefit of using cyanide, dangers of recidivism...
