Shouldn't be an issue as water is draining via gravity. We're talking airline sized hole which helps prevent it from siphoning. Here's a thread addressing the issue in more detail for an Elos drain: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2054875

Typically you would open up or close up the air vent in the top of the durso pipe, assuming it was a durso overflow that Elos uses. There should be a hole in the top of the elbow on your drain pipe. You could drill it bigger or add a length of air line to adjust the amount of air going in.

There is no smell, the lid has a carbon sponge as well. The roll only stinks when you unroll it (which I had to do twice unfortunately) I haven?t had any snag issues after replacing the lower section. In fact its working like a breeze now.
