  1. Improving diy skimmer operation

I would look seriously at needle wheel protein skimmers. NW skimmers are far more efficient and they induct much more air. There are MANY different designs out there, but I would stick with something basic like what is shown on www.euro-reef.com Check out their prices and you may want to...
  2. Modded sedra 5000 (ASM) venturi

It's not necessary if you don't move the hose much. I don't like to glue things unless I have to.
  3. Modded sedra 5000 (ASM) venturi

I use a GenX-2400 on my skimmer. I found that the stock venturi sucked so here's what I did: 1 - Chucked the GenX venturi (very important) 2 - Picked up a barbed fitting ($00.50) 3 - Chopped off the end and drilled a hole for 1/4" ID air line 4 - Attached it to the volute ~ done. I did...
  4. Top off float valve

The cheapest and easiest solution would be to have an elevated reservoir (even if temporary) and gravity feed a float valve (even if plumbed temporarily). No way to foul that up plus its cheaper than dirt. You could even set a smaller trash can on a chair to elevate it. Fill it with RO/DI water...
  5. DIY Skimmer Microbubble problem

Yup, you do have to clean it, but it's not so bad. I have my overflow dumping in the filter sock along with my skimmer output. That's about 1000 gph being filtered which makes for some very clean water.
  6. DIY Skimmer Microbubble problem

The easiest way to take care of 100% of the micro bubbles is to simply direct the output of the skimmer into a filter sock. It will absolutely take care of it. I've went round and round with all types of methods like baffles, bubble separators, floss, sponge, etc... and the sock works the best...
  7. where to get an eheim needlewheel...

GreshamH That ER NW, what size Sedra is that one for? I ask because I built a skimmer and ordered a Sedra 3500 NW impeller from Custom Aquatic. When it arrived it did not fit the pump, it was too big. I know for a fact that what I recieved is not for a 3500, but it fits perfectly in a King-4...
  8. where to get an eheim needlewheel...

That needle wheel looks almost exactly like a Euro-Reef NW. I'm sorry guys, but I can't in good conscience modify my pump's impeller without first finding a reasonably priced replacement impeller just in case. Everyone wants like $30.00 for it and I can buy a Euro-Reef NW for that ~ what's up...
  9. Cyano Problem

cvp7900 I used to buy my water too from a local drinking water supplyer. Did you know though that there are virtually no stipulations as to water quality when it comes to drinking water. I ended up buying my own RO unit since the water I was buying was junk too.
  10. Cyano Problem

cvp7900, do you use RO water or RO/DI water? I used to use tap water and eventually had basically the same problem you have. I was told to do some water changes, stop using tap water, get a decent RO unit, try to remove as much cyano as possible and it will eventually go away. It did. I don’t...
  11. DIY Remora/Urchin clone--can it be done?

Can you post a couple pics of the original Urchin nozzle?
  12. where to get an eheim needlewheel...

Here is another idea I have been tossing around. How about modifying one of these to fit an impeller and gluing “Battle Ship” game pegs (or something similar) into the holes. These pieces are typically attached to RC car servos with linkages to operate steering mechanisms, other remote...
  13. where to get an eheim needlewheel...

I used the yellow one, not the wheel type, but the disk. I only got as far as reducing the diameter of the disk, shortening the bristles and drilling a small guide hole in the center. I have some ideas and will definitely post the results as soon as it is completed. I have a standard impeller to...

  15. Wheres the best place to buy live rock in the area?

Midwest Corals in Elkhart is a great place. A heck of a lot closer than Indy but I've always wanted to visit Premium Aquatics. Midwest Corals is impressive.
