Well, using your Kalk dripper with a Neptune Apex would be an option, as the Apex could kick the dripper's pump off if the PH reaches a certain point, like 8.5. It could then kick the pump back on if the ph drops back down. A ph controller could do something similar. If Kalk isn't balancing your...
I favor the Omega Vertex. They are well constructed with premium parts and acrylic and employ a custom designed Sicce pump, w/ custom volute. This makes them quite powerful, but also easy to adjust. They are also entirely ozone resistant and have a built in ozone port. They are by far the best...
All of my fish are spawning, and I feed them SPAM. Just kidding. However, I also think it's interesting how different species react to stress. There is a great deal of difference between how a wild-caught clownfish reacts to the rigors of aquarium life when compared to how a Moorish idol or...
Personally I would recommend a Generac Rapid start 5500, which retails for about $ 659, but you can likely buy from a local Generac dealer for less. Try to track down a Generac dealer/electrician in your area, as they can get you a better price on the unit and install anything you want to add...
Flatworms can devastate a reef tank. Polycladida is a highly diverse group of marine organisms, which include beautiful species, on down to the nasty little creatures known for consuming acropora colonies. Flatworms all found all throughout the ocean, from around deep-sea hydrothermal vents to...
Paul, I have nothing but respect for your contributions to the hobby. That said, I share some of Thales' concerns with how loosely you use your own experience and make it appear as fact, or written in stone. I read your book, and enjoyed it, however when several aquarists have asked me about it...
I remember studying ecology and biology in college, and the topic of biomimicry came up. As I understand it, biomimicry is the process of using nature's systems to solve complex problems - both animal husbandry related and human related. If I remember correctly, velcro is an example of...
I wonder what funny looks the first person who thought of an algae scrubber got. "I am having an algae problem, so I am going to grow a lot of algae..?" Algae scrubbers were never really dismissed, they just fell out of fashion when newer and higher technology methods of reef keeping came along...
So what is the bleeding edge of reef keeping? I sort of think of it as that moment that you step outside of your comfort zone, when an aquarist opens their mind and a new trend emerges. Often the bleeding edge goes against the grain and operates on a new set of rules that redefines common...
I'm not sure a Two Little Fishies reactor, if you're talking about a Phos Ban reactor, would be the best for bio-pellets. The pellets need to churn around, which removes excessive bacterial film, and pushes it out of the reactor so that your skimmer can remove it.
A couple of important tips...
