  1. Plumbing Question

The Quest-Pex that you can get at Lowes / Home Depot uses brass couplings / fittings - at least for the crimp fittings. I believe that you can get compression couplings that are plastic, but are much larger. The pipe itself should certainly be fine if you have a way to use it without the crimp...
  2. Tank Drilling

I picked up one of the ~$42 bits from diamond-drill-and-bit.com (or whatever) and drilled 2 holes in my 150... I planned to use a press, and even picked up one on E-bay, but it ended up that I could not get the drill into the corner where I needed it when in the press, so I just did it...
  3. Bryopsis Battle Web Log

I had a similar recent problem.... my Sailfin tang would nip and it a little, but not really fully control it. I was also having a problem with a severe calcium deficiency, and as I raised the calicum levels while keeping the Alk in check the Bryposis crashed on its own all of a sudden one...
  4. Just got 2 CSL Moonlights....

Anyone used the Moon Lights from BlueLine (Champion Lighting)? How do they compare to the CSL unit? Blue Line's appear to have 4 LEDs per "unit". but not sure of the lumens output specs....
  5. Okay. Five-foot 110 gallon reef. How would*you* light it?

I have a 5'x2'x2' 150gal and its lit as follows: 3 - 250W 10000K MH 2 - 60" VHO actinics general reflector with MH bulbs mounted in line with length of tank... probably would be better with MH bulbs mounted perp. to length of tank in "Spider" reflectors, but it would add height as the...

  7. Chilling out...

Sounds like you need a Dual Temp controller. Has a High and Low setpoint, so that it will keep the temp in between a given range. Turns on the heater when the temp gets too low, and fires the fans when its too high. Several of these exist.... Medusa makes one with a lot of bells and whistles...
  8. bryopsis control. Please help me!!!

I recently had an outbreak of this that quickly spread from one or two rocks to multiple... in the order of a couple of weeks. I have a Sailfin Tang that grazed on it some, but did not seem to make a large impact. It had grown to lenghts of 3" or so when I was about to the point of pulling the...
  9. 2 - 250 Watt MH Magnetic Or Electronic Ballasts?

I've got 3 IceCap 250W MH ballast running 10K German bulbs and I've not had any problems with flicker, etc.....
  10. Finally - coralline growth starting

Ive been using Calcium Chloride carefully to bring the calcium up without also bring the Alk up as the Alk is already in the right range I think some of my Calcium problems were a result of using too much buffer originally..... A good article on the Alk / Ca balance and how to correct various...
  11. Finally - coralline growth starting

After many months now of no coralline algae growth on the sides of the tank and the PVC sub-structure, I'm finally getting a little bit of growth.... I'm attributing this to finally getting my calcium levels in line.... they were in the lower 200's when I realized how low they were (I have not...
  12. What is this (algae)?

This thing (pic attached) has popped up and grown from nothing to about 6" tall and 3" to 4" in diameter in under 2 weeks. The picture is not the best, but its brownish in color, translucent, appears to have air bubbles inside in some of the branches. I figure its some type of algae.... can't...

Pics are at the bottom of the initial post.....
  15. what type of algae are these?

Yep... sorry for the picture quality / focus. My digital camera does not have the best macro capability. The algae in #2 has almost a chalky white appearance and typically only the top 1/4" or so is green, when there are just starting and small it may be all green and has a yellow / green...
