I started with a 37, and now realize a lot of my problems was due to stability. The smaller tank is harder to control, but it is possible. Go with a deeper vs longer tank, they look better in my opinion, especially with the MH ripple effect.
Don't think he had enough time to die from your lack of light yet. Maybe the tank is not mature enough. My experiences:
I dose with ESV spray dried phytoplankton - less hair algae than with DT's, and I notice growth response from clams/corals.
Don't buy a Crocea, he will beat your clam death...
These "global warming" predictions into many years into the future is so much crap.
Accurately predict the weather say, Saturday after next, then tell me what is going to happen 20 years from now. There is HUGE amounts of data available for weather "prediction" that can't be determined accurately.
The same thing happened to me the other day. I lost the second one, and it may be for good. They are spooked way too easily. The only thing different is I added a very small skunk cleaner shrimp, and the firefish disappeared under a rock and hasn't came out since.
Open top with plenty of fan circulation.
I have a 150W HQI 10K MH which is very nice for the tank, but I would do the 250W if I could do it over again so I can transfer it to my future 120gal. I think I have the same tank you do, 37gal tall? I have a sump/w refugia lighting, two PH that run hot...
When I started dosing B-Ionic, my pink coraline took off. This also roughly coincided with phosphates dropping as my tank matured though. The stuff is great. Everything is now coated with bright pink. One powerhead is completely pink encrusted, cord and all. There are old snail shells on the DSB...
I basically did the same thing with a 150W 10K MH. My beautiful crocea's colors dulled to a dark blue/purple in a few months. Too much UV? He is healthy and growing very slowly.
Hey Austin TX
If you can drop down through the attic and out a wall behind the tank, great.
Do you have room for another breaker in your box? Do you have another smaller box in your garage? Make it a GFCI breaker dedicated to your tank.
This would not be difficult to do. The hardest part would...
I have a pistol shrimp that came with the rock with the same sounds as you describe.
Look for digging around the bottom of the tank. I have lost two cleaner shrimp, but don't know if it is him. Hwe will pop crabs and such if they get near his lookouts. He came with the rock, so he is a survivor.
I use ESV B-Ionic 2 part, and have a pretty good balance of corals/fish that deplete the buffer/calcium at an equal rate.
The biggest buffer eater I have noticed is allowing the tank to go from 78 to 82 during the summer. I then add a separate buffer because it is cheaper than B-Ionic.
World Down Under
Check out Dallas North Aquarium though, they may have something you gotta have. They have a nice display tank out of place at one end of the store that has nice pieces in it.
