  1. Dual Durso loud, one not working??????UPDATE

Not sure what this means... Could you provide some pictures? Is it similar to the 'durso standpipe attached to an external overflow' as shown on the durso webpages? Are you saying that you have a single overflow box with two siphons and outflow pipes on the external box?? If this is the case...
  2. Protecting hardwood floors

Yeah... That's why I stated 'tank not too big'; hinting at small tanks less than 60g or so. If the tank with LR/Sand weighs about 600-700 lbs; there should not be a problem on standard flooring. It equates to 150-175 lbs per 'foot'; not that much of a concentrated load (IMHO). If I were...
  3. Protecting hardwood floors

Plastic can also trap water vapor and moisture beneath it. If the tank is not too big; you might consider mounting the tank stand onto casters; or elevate the stand on blocks so you can keep it dry underneath (should there be a spill). Hardwood does not respond well at all to SW spilled on it...
  4. Singapore Angel a.k.a Vermiculated Angel?

I have kept this fish; with good success. Best left to a FO system; a recent attempt to keep one in a reef tank with SPS resulted in munched corals. Everything I had read indicated that they were primarily sponge/algae eaters, but probably not true given my recent problem keeping one. In...
  5. lyretail athias school?

Hmmm... Just judging by the size of your tank; it might be on the small side for a school of anthias. I have 1male, 4 females in my 150g, with lots of rock and they are doing OK, but the male seems a little 'anxious'. A 90g might be too small; would lead to it chasing the females around too...
  6. Clownfish Question

Just FYI... I have 3 separate pairs of clownfish in my 150g with no problems. Percs; Clarkiis and Maroons. Even the smallest perc (3/4") is not bothered by the more dominant clownfish. All fish were placed in as paired juveniles (not big mean ol fish that had a tank to call their own). Each...
  7. Weekly Discussion - Learning curve

There is a HUGE learning curve in this hobby. Many people setup reef tanks after reading a few books and have initial success with a great looking tank and no understanding of the amount of maintenance or work required to keep the tank up. No amount of reading can prepare you for the 'work'...
  8. Lighting Suggestion

2x 150W MH would be fine for your application (Sofite/LPS). I think the 175's are easier to get different lamps for, you might look at getting 175's. I recommend electronic ballasts IceCap/hellolights/LN Electronic, etc.; they are much more energy efficient than the Core/Coil ballasts.
  9. crushed marble vs. silica sand for DSB

I would expect aragonite sand to be more soluble than sand made of marble (dissolves in seawater less than ~400 feet deep). Bond geometry in mineral solids make quite a bit of difference in their ability to dissolve. But if calcium dissolution that is not that important to you, then go with the...
  10. Weekly Discussion - BB vs DSB

That does not explain why it is being overlooked in this thread; as if success is non-existent with DSB setups. His reef defies most if not all of the arguments that 'a DSB will crash, just a matter of time'. Doesn't it seem that this phenomena of DSB's crashing is pretty recent (within the...
  11. Weekly Discussion - BB vs DSB

Has this been verified scientifically? I thought that that is what the salt test here on reefs.org was going to try and determine. sheesh... all I was trying to say is that you can have blooms in temperate waters or equatorial... They happen in nature; wouldnt you then expect that nutrient...
  12. Unknown creature!!

    Sounds like flatworms...
  13. crushed marble vs. silica sand for DSB

Never said that you would not have a sandbed 'full of life'... You could have a CC bed 'full of life' also. Just mentioning that it -may- not work as well as a sandbed with the ideal size/type of silt. If the grain sizes are too large your denitrification capacity will also be limited.
  14. Succesful spawning and rearing of Torch Coral, Euphyllia Gla

Nice pictures!! Congrats on the self-fragging! I had something similar happen to a frogspawn; it developed a calcium nodule in one of it's heads and then 'dropped' it down onto the rock beneath it. Another form of 'polyp bailout' I guess... -Russ
  15. AquaC Remora Questions

My old Remora Pro would get salt creep buildup at the injector. You might check/clean the injector area. If yours has the threaded plug at the elbow above the injector you might unscrew it and clean the injector with a bottle brush to be sure there is no blockage also. But if it has stopped...
