Yea, if the top is going to be like what you have on the bottom, you definetly don't need the plywood.

My 225 sits on a all plywood stand that's been up for 10+ years. 2x4 are an overkill if you seen the particle stands manufactured for tanks.

You could leave the top like that without the plywood, but if your concern a piece of 2x4 in the middle to pull it together would give a lot more lateral strength. I think that stand is more than enough for a 120. I would be more afraid of the screws giving out over the wood.

You would still have ich in your system even with a UV sterilizer. Best method ime was hypo.

Water from an exsisting system will posses the source of bacteria, but media filter, rocks, sand, etc will hold more. You can use nothing but old water from a water change and new tank will be cycled aswell.

Fresh water is a lot less maintance and more wallet friendly. Planted fresh water tanks are awesome too, depends on preference, but I think the colors and movements of saltwater gives me a happier vibe over a murky planted slow mellow feel of a planted fresh. Just have both best of both worlds.

Got both fresh and salt, but started from fresh since childhood. The old man was a discus, Angel kind of guy. I think most people would start from fresh, then planted, then marine, since it's like an easier stepping stone for understanding water chemistry? It's always the poor bettas, comets...
