I heard the hydroids have a sting that can irritate other tank mates. Also, they seem to be spreading quickly as I am only in the cycling stage but have spotted at least 3 growing colonies of them.
I need some more opinions. What exactly are these things? They came on some live rock and my tank is currently cycling, so I haven't added any livestock.
Thanks Len, I was hoping for that answer. That's why I want to combine it with a hang-on refugium or another sump (would increase filtering capacity with rock and chaeto, and increase water flow). If I was to buy one or the other, which one would you recommend - the hang on refugium or a...
The chaeto is submerged all the time. They are in containers full of water, the way they exchange the water is through the flow down from the overflow pipe. When that water drips in, it overflows the container water and leads to the water circulation. It was kind of spur of the moment...
what do you all feel about hang on refugiums?
I have a glass tank so I can't drill a built in overflow. I currently have a TruVu sump with hang on overflow but it was designed for bioballs. I took the balls out and replaced them with small containers holding chaeto, letting the water drip...
is it common for feather dusters to come on live rock and how big do they get? I'm just a little paranoid of aiptasia. As a new reefer, I've been reading about them a lot. I hope these really are feather dusters and that they play nice
I just bought some live rock to cycle in my new tank and noticed some feather-fan like things on the rock. They seemed to come out when the light was on. We noticed a LOT of red ones - they closed into tubes. There was also a big tan one that also closed, but not into a tube. It seemed to...
Does anyone have experience with insidesun.com and their ballasts? Specifically, I was looking at this one:
http://www.insidesun.com/index.php?acti ... revstart=0
It's a 250w MH ballast with an option for a 10k aquarium bulb with white reflector. This will be for a 55 gallon saltwater reef...
I have live sand, and I'll be putting in "dead" rocks very soon. They are currently being cleaned and disenfected. The rocks came from a previous owner of a saltwater tank that became infested with bristleworms. Should I be looking into getting some live rocks or just let the live sand cycle...
With compact fluoroescents, how much time should I leave the lights on while cycling? I've just started a 55g saltwater setup with live sand, so 8 hours on? 9, 10?
