I've been waiting a long time for this little guy, and with the annual herpetological show Saturday morning in Syracuse, I finally got a chance to purchase him. Slim pickins, for certain, as there were only 5 there total.

Yup, he mostly eats 'dusted' crickets with the calcium and vitamin powder all over them. Trust me, he's spoiled, and it'll only get worse once I've got him in the new house. I'm having a custom enclosure built for him

I'm working on it, I'm working on it.

I just missed it a few times, but that was only one opportunity. When I get all settled into the house, I'll be taking tons of pics of him. I'm certain I'll get one of those sooner or later.

Chip, we had some Jackson Chameleons several years back and I want to share this advice, tear the back legs off of the crickets before you feed them to your new pet or you may learn the hard way as we did that the long jumping legs can get caught in the digestive tract and kill your pet.
I agree also that you should dust the crickets before feeding and try to vary the diet. Our's loved live meal worms too!

I thought you would be interested in seeing a few old scans of my former chameleons. They were some of the best pets I ever cared for. This was a few years ago and they have since departed but they were gorgeous and make me smile everytime I think back...

oh btw...the best advice I can give you is the same I can give for reefing...the ONLY things that matter are light and making them happy. They live in very unforgiving conditions in the wild, they strive with parasites and infections and attacks from cobras and other very dangerous circumstances, and all they have is the sun and food. I wouldn't be too concerned with cricket legs, after all how are you gonna rip off the legs of 2-3 doz crickets a day? UVB emitting flours or MH so they can break down the calcium is whats most important, and DON'T over do it with the calcium powder. They definitely suffer from over nutrition.

Well, if the guy I bought him from is to be believed, he'll be a neon blue with red speckles around the throat and head. We'll see in about 4-5 months.

Great chameleons you had! Man, that veiled got pretty stunning-looking when pissed off, eh?

yeah, the female really turned pitch black with yellow spots when gravid and mad! The male looked like that year round, very stunning. I actually had to seperate them cause he was always "in-the-mood" and she obviously wasn't. He actualy lived on my ficus tree in my bedroom and would warm up on the VHO"s from my reef at the time! You wouldn't believe how worried I would get about him drowing in the reef! He would eat flies and a few crickets I would put out in a large yogurt container. When they get up in years, they are less maintainence. Just content doing whatever I guess!

I stated I lost a Jackson due to not tearing off those hind legs. Take it for what it's worth, advice from someone who lost a pet because of it. 2-3 doz. crickets a day? I don't know about yours but mine sure didn't eat that many. Tearing those legs off as a precaution for your pet's wellfare is not unlike many things you do for your reef tanks. Do you just pour in unfiltered tap water because it's easier that way? I don't think so! Take the time and tear off those damn legs. It takes 2 seconds per cricket. Yes I feel strongly about this, I lost a pet!

Jacksons don't eat half as much as a vieled or panther chameleon! I know because I had one, they live in lower heat higher elevation climates and digest slower than these madagascan or yemenese brothren! Take it from me, for a pair of Vieled chameleons, I purchased 1000 crickets a month from Timberland Crickets and both would 5-6 dozen a day, especially the female when she was gravid, or right after she layed eggs! I agree with on taking advice from someone who has experienced an issue first hand, but of all the chameleons I have assisted in caring for as a breeders partner, we never lost any chameleons due to cricket legs! Also, mealwworst staples for your chameleons. At best they should be fed as treats to prevent boredom of regular food. They do appreciate a varied diet!
