Hello, I am getting a couple of digital slr cameras and would like to get an awesome photo printer. What would you guys recommend. I currenlty have an hp inkjet printer and I know there has to be some way better technology out there then this. The pics look good, but only for about 5 minutes and then it seams like they get ruined really fast. I heard about dye-sub and other printers but dont really know anything about them or other awesome printers out there.

Thanks,
Mike

Lucky you, sounds like you're on the fast-track to some super photography! Personally, I'm running an HP Deskjet 970 CSE Professional Series inkjet. It's about 3 yrs old and does a decent enough job. Honestly, I think the real difference is getting good quality photo paper for your prints. I can notice an extraordinary difference between printing the same image at the same dpi on cheap-o paper and good Kodak premium photo paper.

One other thing...some of the newer inkjets use (iirc) 7-color cartridges instead of the usual 3...I haven't seen proofs from them yet, but I hear you get much deeper and more accurate color resolution.

first, on size of prints you're trying to make

Dye-sub printers (kodak 8500 i believe) but only go to 8x12 (at a reasonable price)

for inkjet, it still depends

1) speed vs longevity... for speed, its the canon s9000 (or 900 if you dont want 13x19 capability)

2) for longevity... its the epson 2200 (13" x 40' roll), 7 inks, but not quite as fast as the canon

fwiw, i have the 2200
