Wow, most impressive stuff. I was thinking about plunking down $500 for a simple 2x optical magnifier for my prosumer minolta, but now I might just save my cashola for a few more months and see if I can swing for the eos. I'd kill to have interchangable lenses.

Schweet, it's got a DOF preview. That's one thing that my minolta is sorely lacking.

Also it looks like it has a nice quick AF system. I do a lot of sports photography and that'd kick butt. Oooooo my wife would never let me upgrade cameras again though. :?

I think this is one of the biggest anouncements that has come to the digital photography era!

This will allow all of the pro-sumer people out there get into a great camera at a good price.

Where did you order it from? Did you also order the EF Extention tubes? When did they say you could expect it? It sounds so exciting and I think I'm going to go for it too.

I work at a store that sells them so that is where I ordered it. (westworld computers, www.westworld.ca).

I have talked to my canon Rep and he said that we should expect them before the end of September.

I am going to get it with the little lens that they bundle with as I don't have any lens's right now but I am sure this will become a place were I will have to spend some cash, I am hopping to pick up some used lenses.

I can't wait to get my hands on it.

dammit, I just spent $500 on an s400 elph. just think. I could have bought a real dslr.

All the specs look good. It is a digtal rebel, with all the features of the rebel line.

I've got an elan IIE in the closet gathering dust. . .

I have a Rebel X as my Film camera. I must say thats a sweet rig. Too bad I just bought my Fuji. I can add fixed lenses though, and I still haven't maxed it out.

sharkyy, it's basically a Canon 10D with a few less features.

Same sensor, same processor.

So I can assure you, speed and optics will be excellent. The only real drawback vs. the 10D I know of is it shoots less frames per second and has a smaller buffer. But if I never had the 10D, I never would have missed it.

Also I know in the SLR world a 2x optical magnifier (i.e., teleconverter) is pretty well known for effecting picture quality rather negatively. No way in hell I would spend $500 on one of those, they're only $250 for a top-of-the-line SLR model. Definitely wait and get the Digital Rebel, you won't be disappointed with where your extra $300 went.

BTW, I completely expect the included lens to suck, but for $100 it's probably good enough to have around.

i just got a smokin deal on a 10D and then canon drops this bad boy on the table.....

but after all.. I love my 10D. i am glad i paid the extra clams....

No worries, you will enjoy the extra features of the 10D including faster FPS and a larger buffer, plus probably mirror lockup and a few other things. Canon did a great job of putting a quality low-priced product on the table while not making people (myself at least) regret getting the 10D in the least.

Now, had I gotten a digital rebel I probably never would have missed those things. But no way am I going back now.

How are the pics coming along?

pics are comming along good. I am swapping out my sigma lenses for the canon EF lenses... I borrwed an EF lens from a buddy and you could see and hear the difference in quality..

the sigma lenses are good starter lenses.

I think the 10D is still a great value. Canon purposesly "de-featured" a lot of functions on the 300D in the software domain, which is kind of annoying if you ask me. For example, you can't select metering or AF modes shooting manual, which is a huge negative for me. The 10D is a full function dSLR and I think you did right buying it.

Being a Nikon glass owner, all this is moot to me

So I have a question. With slrs and dslrs and macro photography, is it more a function of the lens or the camera that determines the quality of images?

Anybody know if this new canon is going to have a direct view through the camera (is that TTL?) or a little LCD in the eyepiece?

It's dependant on the lens only.

The 300D has a TTL viewfinder, but it's a Pentamirror as opposed to a Pentaprism on the other dSLRs. Not as good, but infinitely more accurate then electronic viewfinders.
