More bang for the buck than Canon G5?

I'm thinking about getting the Canon PowerShot G5? Anything in the same price range as good or better? Does it produce good macro shots? I'm very new to cameras.

A friend has a canon s50. 5 meg pixels, and everything manual you want. However, you can't add filters like you can with the G series. He got it for around $500. I don't know the price on a G5 (or the stats for that matter.) So you might want to checkit out.
