Basically the lighting period will be for your viewing. So I would think 6-8 hours of regular lighting would be good but you could run it more and it wouldn't matter that much. Also, the best thing to do is get a timer, if you don't have one already. This way the lighting period is the same all the time. This will be better for the fish in the long run, less stress as they'll get use to the light cycle.

+1... you could also leave the moonlights on most of the time. So say you get home from work most days at 6. You could do something like lights on from 2p-10p (so it's on during the day on weekends too) then moonlights from 10pm-midnight.
