Browning On Rock

Is this good growth on my rock? I am new and the tanks been cycling for almost 2 weeks using raw shrimp.

Looks like black sponge.

It's more of a brown than black, and it doesn't come up if I scrape or rub it.

looks like diatoms. if your tank has been cycling for 2 weeks (the brown part). But what is the Really dark part of the rocks? Where did you get the rock from?

i bought the rock from marco rocks or reef rocks i forget, but I got it dead, i seeded it with a 2lb rock that i bought from Feng down at the Red Sand in Dunellen NJ.

But what is with the Black part of the rocks in the picture. If that was brand new rock it should be "white"

it was white when i got it, now 2 weeks into the cycle and its turning brown, all im asking is if its normal for this to happen, or if somethings going wrong.

It looks like Brown Algae Bloom. Nothing that a few snails can't clean up. You might need stronger lights.

I had similar issue few weeks ago, I ordered a large clean up crew of snails, hermits and an urchin. My rock looks a lot better. You have anything on glass yet? I waited too long and it spread to my glass but the crew took care of it all. I used reefcleaners but there is a bunch of place to get a cuc

there was a little on the sand, but not really any on the glass, and is it safe to put a cleanup crew in only 2 weeks into the cycle?

I'm still kinda lost about why the rock looks black where it is not brown... I have never seen rocks turn black like that in 2 weeks.

I missed the cycle part, I wouldn't yet. Few more weeks. If cycling I wouldn't put lights on at all either. Could help a little

Some of my base rock was darker in spots, could just be picture making it more black looking

ill try not running the lights too see what happens, and theres no black, its white rock with brown growing on it, theres no black at all.

I see in that pic the brown diatoms on the right side of the rock. What is that color where it is not brown? Maybe just the picture?? Is that a total shadow maybe that is making it look black/dark...

The color is brown, there's no black at all.

no, and it doesn't come off, easily that is.

That looks like bread mold imo. Maybe its from the decaying shrimp ur cycling with.
